Zaheer Abbas Criticises India Over Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Boycott, Calls for Politics-Free Cricket

The Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to boycott the match came without prior public indication and created uncertainty around the tournament schedule.

Former Pakistan batting great Zaheer Abbas has spoken out amid the growing controversy surrounding Pakistan’s decision to boycott its T20 World Cup 2026 match against India. Abbas criticised India for what he described as the increasing politicisation of cricket and called on both countries to restore sporting ties in the spirit of friendship and mutual respect.

Speaking during a media interaction, Abbas said that cricket should not be influenced by political disputes and urged both nations to behave like neighbours on the field. He expressed disappointment over the recent developments, particularly Pakistan’s refusal to play India at a neutral venue in Colombo, a decision that surprised many observers in the cricketing world.

The Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to boycott the match came without prior public indication and created uncertainty around the tournament schedule. Critics questioned the move, noting that the fixture was not being held in either country and therefore posed no direct political or security concern.

Zaheer Abbas, however, placed responsibility for the strained relations on India. He referred to incidents during the Asia Cup, where Indian players reportedly refused to shake hands or accept the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi. According to Abbas, such actions send negative signals and contribute to mistrust between the two cricketing nations.

Abbas emphasised that cricket has historically acted as a bridge between India and Pakistan and should continue to do so. He said that both boards must separate political disagreements from sporting competition and allow players to compete freely without external pressures.

The former cricketer also expressed concern over how repeated boycotts and controversies could damage the future of international cricket. He warned that fans are the biggest losers when high-profile matches between India and Pakistan are cancelled, as these encounters are among the most anticipated fixtures in global sport.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not officially responded to Abbas’s comments. Indian officials have consistently maintained that sports administration and political matters operate independently, and that tournament decisions are governed by international bodies like the International Cricket Council.

The ICC now faces the challenge of managing tensions between member boards while ensuring the smooth conduct of the T20 World Cup. With Pakistan’s participation under question and previous changes already made to the tournament lineup, administrators are under pressure to prevent further disruptions.

Cricket experts remain divided over the issue. While some believe Pakistan’s boycott undermines the spirit of the game, others argue that unresolved diplomatic tensions inevitably spill over into sports. Zaheer Abbas’s remarks have added another layer to the debate, reigniting discussions on whether cricket can truly remain separate from politics in the subcontinent.

As the tournament approaches, calls for dialogue and compromise continue to grow. Whether India and Pakistan can find common ground and resume cricketing ties remains uncertain, but voices like Abbas continue to advocate for keeping the game above political conflict.
