For Gopinath, running transcends the pursuit of medals; it's a way of life that embodies health and happiness.

At 75 years old, Gopinath Mohan is defying the stereotypes associated with aging by actively pursuing his passion for running. A retired defense finance official, Gopinath has spent the last decade transforming his life through running, proving that it's never too late to embark on a new journey. His unexpected foray into the world of running began at the age of 65, when he completed a 5K race in Mysore. "In September 2014, I just ran in Mysore," he recalls. "I finished a 5K in 40 minutes. Even without prior experience, I felt I had something within me. I started running and never stopped. For the past 11 years, I've run daily."

Since that first race, Gopinath has participated in numerous events across India, including the prestigious Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. Although he hasn't attended the event in person, his enthusiasm for the marathon is palpable. "Excellent, very nice," he remarks about the marathon experience. "Though I haven't done it in person, I've been participating virtually for the past five years. Whenever I run, even virtually, it feels like I'm with the crowd." The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon offers a unique virtual experience, allowing runners like Gopinath to engage with the event from anywhere in the world. "The app is fantastic," he says. "It announces the start, tracks your distance, and even alerts you about water stations. Even though I'm in Mysore, it feels like I'm in Delhi."

Gopinath's virtual participation highlights the power of technology in creating connections and fostering a sense of community among runners, regardless of their location. His dedication is truly remarkable; over the past 11 years, he has run an astounding 57,412 kilometers and earned approximately 380 medals and nearly 50 trophies, averaging 25 to 30 events each year, including multiple half marathons.

For Gopinath, running transcends the pursuit of medals; it's a way of life that embodies health and happiness. "Keep running, stay healthy," he advises. "Make running a part of your daily life, no matter your age or where you live. It allows you to fully enjoy your later years." His commitment to running is unwavering, as he runs 15 to 18 kilometers every morning, rain or shine. Even while traveling, he makes it a point to fit in his runs, adapting the distance to his circumstances.

Gopinath’s message for anyone hesitant to start their running journey is simple yet powerful: "Don't be afraid to take that first step. Every journey begins with one step, and you'll be surprised by how far you can go." His story serves as an inspiring testament to the idea that age is merely a number. By participating in events like the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, even virtually, Gopinath showcases the inclusive and unifying nature of running, encouraging others to join in and embrace an active lifestyle. His determination and passion continue to inspire those around him, proving that it's never too late to pursue your dreams and enjoy life to the fullest.
