Carlos Alcaraz showcased his remarkable talent and resilience as he defeated Gael Monfils in the second round of the Shanghai Masters, securing a straight-sets victory with a score of 6-4, 7-5. This win not only extends Alcaraz’s impressive winning streak to 12 matches but also marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first Spaniard to reach the quarter-finals of this prestigious tournament since 2017.
Alcaraz, who had previously faced Monfils earlier in the season in Cincinnati, came into this match determined to avenge that defeat. From the outset, the match was highly competitive, with Monfils, at 38 years old, aiming to become the second-oldest ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finalist in history. The Frenchman put up a strong fight, matching Alcaraz’s intensity during the early stages of the match and even threatening to break his serve.
However, Alcaraz demonstrated his ability to stay calm under pressure. In the first set, after a closely contested battle, he seized control after breaking Monfils' serve in the ninth game. His aggressive play and strategic shot selection allowed him to take the first set, 6-4. In the second set, despite showing flashes of brilliance, Alcaraz faced moments of difficulty as Monfils fought back, putting pressure on the young Spaniard.
Despite the challenges, Alcaraz remained composed, serving three games to love throughout the match and showcasing his improved form. Monfils managed to fend off two out of three break points in a crucial penultimate game, but Alcaraz capitalized on his opportunities, ultimately closing out the set 7-5.
Reflecting on his performance, Alcaraz expressed his satisfaction with how he controlled his emotions and waited for the right moments to strike. “The main thing I tried in this match was to stay calm, to control my emotions, and wait for my chances," he remarked. "That helped me a lot to show my best tennis during the match.” He also noted a marked improvement in his form compared to earlier in the American swing, feeling more in tune with the ball and confident in his game.
With this victory, Alcaraz is set to face Tomas Machac in the quarter-finals, where he will look to continue his pursuit of the title in Shanghai. As he advances in the tournament, his combination of skill, maturity, and mental fortitude suggests that he remains a formidable contender on the ATP Tour.
