Alpine Formula 1 Academy drivers Sophia Flörsch and Abbi Pulling are poised to make their debut in Formula E machinery during an all-female test with Nissan next month. This exciting opportunity comes as part of the pre-season testing for the upcoming Formula E season, which will take place at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia from November 4-7. Notably, the final afternoon session of this testing period is reserved exclusively for female drivers, allowing teams to showcase their commitment to promoting gender diversity in motorsport.
Nissan has selected Flörsch and Pulling to represent the team during this pivotal test, which requires all participating teams to run at least one female driver, with encouragement to include two. This initiative aims to foster inclusivity and provide female talent with essential track time in the latest Gen3 Evo cars. Flörsch and Pulling are both eager to demonstrate their skills and contribute to the team's preparations for the forthcoming Season 11.
Sophia Flörsch, a 23-year-old German driver, has spent the last two seasons competing in Formula 3, most recently with Van Amersfoort Racing. Although she faced challenges in securing points during the past season, her experience extends beyond F3; she has competed in the European Le Mans Series and participated in the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours three times from 2020 to 2022. Reflecting on her upcoming test, Flörsch expressed her excitement about driving a modern Formula E car, emphasizing the stark differences from her previous racing experiences. "I’m always curious to try new things," she noted, adding that she is highly motivated to maximize the test and assist the team as they gear up for the new season. Flörsch also plans to spend time in the simulator to prepare thoroughly for Valencia, aiming to extract the best performance possible from the car.
On the other hand, Abbi Pulling is currently the points leader in the female-only F1 Academy championship, having secured an impressive seven wins out of ten races during her sophomore season with Rodin. The 21-year-old Briton has also made strides in British F4, claiming a victory at Brands Hatch earlier this year. Pulling expressed her long-standing desire to drive a Formula E car, calling the opportunity to test the Nissan e-4ORCE 05 a "dream" come true. She acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead, stating that she is excited to learn and adapt to the new environment while working closely with the Nissan team. Pulling's approach is focused on taking things step by step, with an emphasis on fulfilling the team’s expectations and enjoying a productive testing session.
Overall, the participation of Flörsch and Pulling in this all-female test signifies a positive step towards increasing representation of women in motorsport, particularly in high-performance series like Formula E. Their involvement not only highlights their individual talents but also underscores the importance of initiatives aimed at nurturing young female drivers in the competitive landscape of motorsport. As they prepare for this unique opportunity, both drivers are set to make their mark and inspire future generations of women in racing.
