Arsenal legend Sol Campbell is set to visit Kolkata in December as the International Event Ambassador for the prestigious Tata Steel World 25K (TSW 25K) race, which is scheduled to take place on December 15 in the vibrant "City of Joy." The race, which has earned recognition as the world’s first World Athletics Gold Label 25K, continues to grow in prominence, attracting top-tier athletes and contributing to the development of a robust running culture in West Bengal.
At 50 years old, Campbell remains one of football's most iconic defenders. He began his professional career at Tottenham Hotspur before making a controversial move to their North London rivals, Arsenal, in 2001. This high-profile transfer stirred considerable debate, but Campbell quickly proved his worth. As a key player in the historic "Invincibles" squad, he helped lead Arsenal to an unbeaten 2003-04 Premier League season, a remarkable achievement that has yet to be matched in English football. Throughout his career, Campbell also made significant contributions to the England national team.
As the TSW 25K International Event Ambassador, Campbell will play a prominent role in this much-anticipated event, which has gained recognition not only for its competitive edge but also for its focus on promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. The event is particularly special because it brings together participants from all walks of life, uniting the community through the shared goal of fitness and well-being.
Campbell expressed his excitement about his upcoming visit to Kolkata, stating, "Coming to the City of Joy would be a huge pleasure. Being an Englishman, I know India through cricket, but I have heard that this city is known for its sport-loving people. I am excited to be in Kolkata, a sporting city, and part of the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata, a race that has united the community and works towards a healthy and active life."
This marks a significant moment for the TSW 25K, as the event continues to elevate its status globally, bringing international figures like Campbell to engage with the local sporting community. It also reinforces the growing influence of running and fitness events in India, where the Tata Steel World 25K stands as a key event in the calendar for both amateur runners and elite athletes.
As the countdown to the race continues, the excitement surrounding Campbell’s visit adds another layer of anticipation, further solidifying the TSW 25K’s place as a landmark event in Kolkata’s sporting landscape.
