Francesco Bagnaia delivered a crucial performance in qualifying for the MotoGP Barcelona Grand Prix, claiming pole position with a time of 1m38.641s, narrowly beating Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro by just 0.055 seconds. The Factory Ducati rider’s result was a significant boost to his championship challenge as he heads into the race weekend with a clear advantage.
Bagnaia set the pace from the beginning of qualifying, posting an impressive 1m38.835s on his first flying lap in Q2, which initially put him at the top of the timing sheets. His strong performance continued as the session progressed, with Espargaro and Gresini’s Marc Marquez providing strong competition.
During the first half of the session, Marquez was able to take advantage of Bagnaia’s slipstream, which helped him move into second place. Similarly, championship leader Jorge Martin also benefited from Espargaro’s tow and was able to secure a spot on the front row at the halfway point of qualifying.
However, for the final run, Bagnaia opted to go solo and chose not to rely on the slipstream, fitting a fresh rear tyre to his Ducati GP24. This decision paid off as he improved his lap time by another two-tenths, clocking 1m38.641s and sealing pole position. The decision to go without a tow allowed him to focus on his own lines and maintain an uninterrupted lap, crucial for improving his time.
Espargaro, who had been a serious threat throughout the session, pushed hard on his final lap but could only manage a 1m38.696s, which placed him second on the grid. Despite this, it was still a commendable result for Espargaro, especially considering this is his final MotoGP qualifying session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a track he has consistently performed well at.
As for Jorge Martin, the championship leader struggled to find the pace in the final stages of qualifying and could only manage fourth, which means he will have work to do in the race to extend his lead in the standings. Marquez, riding for Gresini, also benefitted from a tow and secured second place, positioning himself well for the race.
Overall, Bagnaia’s performance demonstrated both his skill and the strength of his Ducati machine, as he continues to push for a strong result in the championship standings. With Espargaro and Marquez close behind, the Barcelona GP is shaping up to be a thrilling contest, and Bagnaia will be determined to use his pole position to take control of the race from the start.
The race is expected to be highly competitive, with Bagnaia leading the way, but Espargaro and Marquez, along with other fast riders, will be looking to challenge for the podium.
