Marco Bezzecchi has voiced his disappointment with Maverick Vinales following their high-speed collision during the sprint race at the Australian Grand Prix. The incident occurred when both riders were pushing hard, leading to a crash that left Bezzecchi on the ground and Vinales showing him an obscene gesture. After the race, Bezzecchi took time to reflect on the situation, sharing his thoughts in a post-race interview.
"I didn't appreciate his behavior immediately after the crash," Bezzecchi stated, referring to Vinales' reaction. "If the roles were reversed, I would have gone to check on the other rider to see if they were okay instead of showing them the middle finger and hurling insults after we crashed at 300 km/h." His comments reflect a broader concern within the racing community about the sportsmanship and conduct of riders in the heat of competition.
Following the crash, Vinales expressed his frustration in the media, which only added to the tension surrounding the incident. The stewards sided with Vinales, penalizing Bezzecchi with a long lap penalty for the race on Sunday. Bezzecchi completed the penalty but later reported that he was in pain due to the crash, which affected his performance in the race. He ultimately fell off his bike and dropped out of contention, adding to the challenges he faced that weekend.
Bezzecchi provided a detailed account of the collision, explaining that Vinales had passed him on the straight with the help of the slipstream. He noted that his bike was moving to the left due to the wind, requiring him to lean the bike to avoid going wide. According to Bezzecchi, "When I saw him, I tried to continue moving to the right, but I got sucked in by the slipstream. I couldn't do anything to avoid the contact." His explanation highlights the complexities of racing at high speeds and the split-second decisions riders must make in such situations.
He also compared this incident to previous racing collisions involving other riders, suggesting that while they were similar, they were often viewed differently based on circumstances. "Normally, the guy behind is the one who gets the blame," he explained, referencing past incidents involving notable riders like Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin. Bezzecchi acknowledged that this type of situation could happen frequently in racing, but he expressed relief that other riders had managed to avoid disaster in similar circumstances.
Despite his grievances with Vinales' actions and the fallout from the incident, Bezzecchi stated, "As far as the penalty is concerned, I don't care. I don't complain. I did my long lap." This indicates his acceptance of the racing penalties that come with the sport, showing a level of maturity in dealing with the consequences of high-stakes competition. His focus remains on improving his performance and maintaining a positive outlook as he moves forward in the racing season.
