Broc Feeney delivered an impressive victory in the penultimate race of the 2024 Supercars season in Adelaide, but the spotlight was shared with his Triple Eight Chevrolet teammate Will Brown, who secured his maiden Supercars Championship with a strong second-place finish. This achievement marks a milestone for Brown, wrapping up the title with one race still to go.
Feeney's Dominant Strategy
Feeney started the race from third on the grid, trailing the front-row Tickford Racing Ford Mustangs of Tom Randle and Cam Waters. Demonstrating strategic brilliance, Feeney opted for an early first pit stop, a hallmark of his racing style this season. This move allowed him to gain track position, and by the time he completed his second, longer stop, Feeney had rejoined just ahead of Waters, securing his lead. Feeney ultimately crossed the finish line with a commanding 12-second margin.
“We knew what we had to do today,” Feeney said post-race. “A 12-second win is really big, but we have a bigger job to do next year. He’s [Brown] done a fantastic job this year, and he’s pushed me to another level.”
Brown's Path to the Championship
Starting from fifth on the grid, Brown steadily climbed through the field. With 21 laps remaining, he passed Randle, moving his points tally far enough ahead to confirm his championship title. In a final push, Brown overtook Waters for second place with 10 laps to go, securing a 1-2 finish for Triple Eight.
“It was so hot out there!” Brown said, visibly thrilled after the race. “It’s cool to get a podium. We got one at every round this year. I came into this year thinking that if I didn’t win or come second, I had let the team down.”
The Race Highlights
- Cam Waters: The Tickford Racing driver finished third, successfully fending off a late challenge from Matt Payne of Grove Racing, who placed fourth.
- Matt Payne: Payne had split the Triple Eight cars in the top-10 shootout but had an otherwise solitary race, finishing just outside the podium spots.
- Tom Randle: Starting second, Randle initially led the race but eventually slipped to fifth after swapping positions with Waters during pit stops.
- Midfield Battles: Brodie Kostecki (Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet) claimed sixth, followed by James Courtney (Blanchard Racing Ford) in seventh, and Andre Heimgartner (Brad Jones Racing Chevrolet) in eighth.
Substitute Drivers Add Uniqueness
The race featured two substitute drivers:
- Cooper Murray: Filled in for Jack Le Brocq, who left to welcome the birth of his first child.
- Dale Wood: Took over for Richie Stanaway, sidelined due to delayed concussion symptoms following a qualifying crash.
Looking Ahead
The 2024 Supercars season finale takes place on Sunday, featuring a 15-minute qualifying session at 10:20 am (ACDST) and a single-lap top-10 shootout at 12:35 pm. The final 78-lap race of the year is scheduled to begin at 3:15 pm.
With his championship secured, Brown will look to end his stellar season on a high note, while Feeney aims to continue his winning form in what promises to be an exciting conclusion to the season.
