The revised lineup will feature Athletics, Para Athletics (Track & Field), Swimming, Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling, Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting, Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls, Para Bowls, and 3x3 Basketball, including 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball.

India's prospects for securing medals at the upcoming Commonwealth Games have taken a significant blow with the announcement that several key sports will be excluded from the Glasgow 2026 edition. Notably, cricket, hockey, wrestling, badminton, and shooting will not feature in the games, which raises concerns about India's potential performance in these disciplines, where they have traditionally excelled.

The decision to drop these popular sports, along with table tennis, squash, and triathlon, has been made as part of efforts to streamline logistics and manage costs effectively. With only four venues set to host the entire event, the Commonwealth Games Federation has opted for a reduced roster of just 10 sports. This adjustment aims to keep the event budget-friendly while ensuring a smooth operational flow during the games.

Glasgow's return as the host city, 12 years after it last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014, brings about changes to the sports program. The total number of events for the 2026 Games will see a reduction of nine compared to the 2022 Birmingham edition. The revised lineup will feature Athletics, Para Athletics (Track & Field), Swimming, Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling, Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting, Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls, Para Bowls, and 3x3 Basketball, including 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball.

The Commonwealth Games Federation's statement emphasized the importance of adapting to a new operational model to deliver a successful and financially sustainable event. "The Games will take place across four venues—Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena (including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome), and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC)," it stated. In terms of accommodation, athletes and support staff will be housed in nearby hotel facilities to ensure convenience and accessibility.

This pruning of the sports roster has left many Indian athletes and fans disappointed, particularly those involved in the excluded sports. India has historically been strong in disciplines like wrestling and badminton, with athletes like PV Sindhu and Bajrang Punia being medal contenders. The absence of these sports could significantly impact India's overall medal tally in 2026.

As the Indian sports community reflects on these developments, the focus will now shift to how athletes and their respective federations will adapt to this changing landscape and prepare for the upcoming challenges. The hope is that India can still make a mark in the remaining sports and leverage its strengths in athletics, swimming, and gymnastics to achieve success at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Notably, cricket, hockey, wrestling, badminton, and shooting will not feature in the games, which raises concerns about India's potential performance in these disciplines, where they have traditionally excelled.
