In an exciting development for the Hockey India League (HIL), the Delhi SG Pipers have announced their leadership for both the men's and women's teams ahead of the revamped season. The franchise has appointed two exceptional athletes—Jacob Whetton, the Australian forward with an illustrious international career, and Shamsher Singh, India's double Olympic medalist—as co-captains of their men's team. This marks a significant moment for the team as they head into the HIL, which is expected to be more competitive and thrilling than ever.
Men's Team Leadership:
Jacob Whetton, a three-time Olympian and a key figure in Australia’s recent successes, brings a wealth of experience to the Pipers' leadership role. With an Olympic silver medal from Tokyo 2020, three Commonwealth Games gold medals, and two FIH Pro League titles under his belt, Whetton is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished forwards in world hockey. His leadership qualities, coupled with his strategic mindset, make him a perfect fit for the role of co-captain.
“I’m extremely honored to co-captain the Delhi SG Pipers alongside Shamsher Singh,” Whetton said upon receiving the news. “The Hockey India League offers an incredible opportunity to compete at the highest level, and I’m excited to lead this team forward.”
Shamsher Singh, a key player for India in recent years, has also been appointed as co-captain. Since making his debut for India in 2019, Shamsher has proven his worth with over 100 international caps and has played pivotal roles in India’s Olympic campaigns, including their historic bronze medal at Tokyo 2020. Known for his calm demeanor, tactical acumen, and leadership on the field, Shamsher is expected to bring balance to the leadership duo alongside Whetton.
"I’m grateful to the team management and coach Graham Reid for entrusting me with this responsibility," said Shamsher. "Jacob and I have worked well together in the past, and I’m looking forward to a successful season as co-captains."
Coach's Perspective:
Graham Reid, head coach of the men’s team, spoke highly of the co-captaincy decision, citing both players' leadership qualities. “Shamsher brings a quiet yet confident leadership style, and his experience at the highest levels of international hockey, especially in India’s Olympic successes, makes him an invaluable asset to the team. Jacob, with his immense international exposure, will complement Shamsher’s leadership perfectly. Their partnership will be crucial in leading the team through a challenging HIL season.”
Women's Team Leadership:
In another historic move, Indian forward Navneet Kaur has been appointed as the captain of the women’s team for the debut season of the women’s Hockey India League. Navneet has been one of India’s most consistent performers over the years, playing 178 international matches and scoring 53 goals. Known for her work ethic, leadership on the field, and commitment to the team, she is seen as the ideal leader for the Pipers’ women’s team.
"I’m extremely proud to be named the captain of the women’s team," Navneet shared. "It’s an exciting new chapter in Indian hockey, and I’m committed to leading this team to success. We have a talented squad, and I’m looking forward to helping bring the best out of every player.”
Belgium’s Emma Puvrez, a skilled defender, has been appointed as vice-captain of the women’s team. Puvrez’s experience in top European competitions and her solid defensive skills will make her a key player in the team’s success.
Dave Smolenaars, head coach of the women’s team, praised Navneet's leadership qualities. “Navneet is a natural leader with a strong presence both on and off the field,” Smolenaars said. “Her ability to communicate, her relentless dedication, and her winning mentality are exactly what the team needs to succeed in this new chapter of the HIL. I have full confidence in her ability to lead the team to great heights.”
Looking Ahead to a New Season:
Both the men’s and women’s teams of the Delhi SG Pipers are poised for a strong showing in the upcoming HIL season. The leadership choices reflect a strategic approach, with a mix of international experience and homegrown talent. As the Pipers prepare to take the field, the dual co-captaincy of the men’s team and Navneet’s captaincy of the women’s team set the stage for what promises to be an exciting and competitive season in the Hockey India League.
The appointment of such talented and experienced captains highlights the franchise’s commitment to fielding competitive teams that can challenge for the top honors in both the men's and women's HIL tournaments. Fans of the Delhi SG Pipers can look forward to seeing these leaders guide their respective teams to success in the coming months.
