Sacha Fenestraz is on the brink of a major career shift, as he is expected to return to Japan’s Super Formula in 2025 with Toyota’s prestigious TOM’S team. Fenestraz, who previously competed in the Japanese motorsport scene from 2020 to 2022 before making the move to Formula E, will replace Ukyo Sasahara in the #37 car as part of a larger deal with Toyota. This move is expected to see the Franco-Argentinian driver return to the racing scene in both Super Formula and SUPER GT, with his 2025 season likely to see him competing in both series.
Fenestraz’s decision to return to Super Formula comes after his exit from Formula E, where he was replaced by Norman Nato at Nissan. This change, which saw him drop out of Formula E with two years remaining on his contract, has led Fenestraz to reassess his options. He had offers from both Toyota and Nissan to race in Super Formula and SUPER GT, with Nissan's offer including a seat in the works NISMO SUPER GT team and a return to Kondo Racing, a team he had previously driven for in Super Formula.
However, Fenestraz’s discontent with how his Formula E tenure ended, especially the premature termination of his contract with Nissan, played a significant role in his decision to pursue a reunion with Toyota. While he was offered a potential return to Kondo Racing, he ultimately chose to accept Toyota's offer, which would see him race in Super Formula and also join Toyota’s efforts in SUPER GT.
With this new partnership, Fenestraz will be looking to build on his previous success in Japan, where he has made a name for himself in Super Formula. While Toyota’s other teams such as Inging, KCMG, and Rookie Racing are expected to maintain their current lineups, Team Impul is set to promote Toyota junior driver Hibiki Taira to a full-time role after his successful stint this season, filling in for Theo Pourchaire.
Fenestraz's return to the Japanese motorsport scene marks a new chapter in his career, as he transitions away from Formula E to focus on the high-speed, high-stakes world of Super Formula and SUPER GT. His move to Toyota’s TOM’S team is expected to reignite his competitive edge and provide him with the opportunity to showcase his talents in two of the most prestigious series in Japanese motorsport.
