George Russell achieved a remarkable feat by securing pole position at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, leading the field in a thrilling qualifying session. His stunning lap was just 0.098 seconds faster than Carlos Sainz, who will start second for Ferrari. Russell’s performance marked his fourth career pole, a significant achievement that came after a dominant display by Mercedes in Friday's practice sessions.
Despite Mercedes' dominance in practice, Russell admitted that he did not expect to secure pole. "Honestly, absolutely not," he said, reflecting on the uncertainty that surrounded his qualifying run. However, the 25-year-old British driver turned in a brilliant performance during Q3, with his final lap proving to be the decisive moment. "It feels incredible to be back on pole. We’ve been so quick all weekend and I just knew coming into that last Q3 lap that’s going to be the one that counts," Russell added.
Russell was ecstatic with the result, especially given how unexpected it was. "I’m just so happy, and we’ve got to do some deep diving to understand why we’ve been so quick so far this weekend because it was a real surprise!" he remarked. The young driver admitted that sometimes, achieving such results requires taking risks, and he felt confident that if he completed a clean lap, he would be in contention for a top spot. "I knew if I did a clean lap, it would be enough to secure a front row, so to get pole position is incredible."
In contrast, his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who had led the way in practice on Thursday, struggled during qualifying and could only manage tenth place. Russell's success in qualifying highlighted a stark difference in performance between the two Mercedes drivers. Despite Hamilton’s strong performance in practice, he was unable to translate that form into a competitive qualifying result.
Russell’s pole position is a significant achievement for Mercedes, who have been working hard to improve their performance this season. The team had shown strong pace throughout the weekend, but securing pole position is an indication that they have the speed to compete at the front. However, Russell was quick to point out that Mercedes now needs to convert this promising qualifying performance into a race result. "We’ve got to make sure we can turn it into a race win. That’s the important thing,” he stated.
The top three qualifiers for the Las Vegas Grand Prix include Russell, Sainz, and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, who will start in third. Charles Leclerc, another Ferrari driver, qualified in fourth. With a packed grid of competitive drivers, the race is set to be a thrilling spectacle, and Russell’s pole position has given Mercedes and fans alike hope that they can challenge for a top result.
