Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) announced on Monday that they will not be appealing the disqualification of the No. 48 car following its performance in the Charlotte Roval race. In a statement, the team explained their reasoning, acknowledging the oversight that led to the disqualification and expressing disappointment over the loss of a playoff spot.
The statement from HMS read, “Hendrick Motorsports will not appeal the disqualification of the No. 48 car following Sunday’s race at the Charlotte Roval. NASCAR allows a clear margin to account for the difference in pre- and post-race weight. After a thorough review by our team and the sanctioning body, we simply did not give ourselves enough margin to meet the post-race requirement. Although unintentional, the infraction was avoidable. We are extremely disappointed to lose a playoff spot under these circumstances and apologize to our fans and partners.”
Initially, all four Hendrick drivers were set to advance to the Round of 8 after Kyle Larson secured victory at the Charlotte Roval. However, during post-race technical inspection, the No. 48 HMS Chevrolet was found to have failed to meet the minimum weight requirements. NASCAR regulations stipulate a tolerance of approximately 17 pounds, and according to Brad Moran, the managing series director for Cup, the No. 48 car was weighed multiple times. The team was given the opportunity to refuel the car and add water to meet the weight specifications but ultimately fell short.
As a consequence of the disqualification, driver Alex Bowman was stripped of his points, resulting in his elimination from the 2024 NASCAR Cup playoffs. This turn of events allowed two-time NASCAR Cup champion and Team Penske driver Joey Logano to re-enter the playoffs, as he was just four points shy of advancing before Bowman’s disqualification.
Additionally, the implications of the No. 48 car's disqualification reverberated through the owner’s championship standings. The No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota, which had initially been eliminated from contention, found itself back in the race due to the changes in points resulting from Bowman’s misfortune.
This incident marks a challenging moment for Hendrick Motorsports, a team known for its competitive edge and consistent performance. The loss of a playoff spot, especially under circumstances attributed to a technical infraction, has left the organization reflecting on the importance of strict adherence to NASCAR regulations. As they move forward, HMS will likely focus on regrouping for the remainder of the season, aiming to capitalize on their remaining opportunities as they strive to regain their competitive standing in the championship race.
