Alena made history by scoring the winning goal against India in a crucial round-robin match during those Games.

In an unexpected yet fascinating intersection of sports, Jakub Mejzlik, the caddy for Olympian Sara Kouskova at the ongoing Hero Women's Indian Open at DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurugram, exemplifies how hockey and golf can be connected through personal history and passion. While hockey is traditionally played on artificial turf and golf thrives in natural surroundings, Jakub seamlessly balances his involvement in both sports, showcasing a unique sporting journey.

Jakub boasts an impressive record, having officiated in over 100 international hockey matches, with a notable 44 games during the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup held in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar earlier this year. His experiences as an umpire have allowed him to develop a deep appreciation for the sport, especially during significant events that draw massive crowds.

In an exclusive interview with MyKhel, Jakub reflected on his time in India during the Hockey World Cup. “I visited India for the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela last January. It was an exhilarating experience. I officiated the opening match between India and Spain at the new stadium in Rourkela, where more than 20,000 fans created an electric atmosphere. The passion for hockey among the Indian audience was palpable,” he recalled. “It was an incredible three weeks filled with quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final in Bhubaneswar. I was honored to receive my golden whistle for officiating 100 international games in India, a significant milestone in my career.”

What makes Jakub’s story even more compelling is that he has no formal background in playing hockey. Instead, his inspiration comes from his mother, Alena Mejzlíková-Kyselicová, a member of the Czechoslovakian team that won a silver medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Alena made history by scoring the winning goal against India in a crucial round-robin match during those Games. This moment left a lasting impression on Jakub and solidified his connection to hockey, despite not being a player himself.

“Actually, my mom has a silver Olympic medal in hockey with Czechoslovakia from 1980. I started to develop a fondness for India after that match because my mom scored against them, leading to a 2-1 victory. This created a unique bond for me with the sport,” Jakub shared. His mother’s legacy not only instilled a love for hockey but also deepened his appreciation for the Indian sporting culture.

As Jakub caddies for Kouskova in the Hero Women’s Indian Open, he continues to bring the same enthusiasm and expertise to the golf course that he applies on the hockey field. His unique background and experiences highlight the interconnectedness of sports, demonstrating how passion can bridge diverse athletic arenas.

Jakub Mejzlik stands as a testament to how personal history can shape one’s relationship with sports, fostering connections that transcend traditional boundaries. His journey reflects the spirit of sportsmanship, celebrating the love for games that bring people together, whether on the turf or the green.
