The second SFA Championship commenced with a vibrant flag-off ceremony at the historic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, drawing participation from legendary hockey players and prominent figures in Indian sports. The event highlighted the presence of renowned Olympians, including Ashok Kumar, a celebrated member of the men’s World Cup-winning team and son of the iconic Olympian Major Dhyan Chand. Other distinguished attendees included 1982 Asian Games silver medallists Vineet Kumar and Romeo James, former Indian women's national team coach Arvind Chhabra, and former Olympian Ashok Dewan.
In his address during the ceremony, Ashok Dhyan Chand inspired young athletes by emphasizing the importance of hard work, dedication, and the collective goal of establishing India as a global sports powerhouse. He expressed his belief that nurturing talent from a young age is crucial for fostering future champions. After delivering his encouraging words, Dhyan Chand, along with the legendary players, officially flagged off the championship, celebrating the achievements of last year's winning teams.
Dhyan Chand praised the SFA Championship, stating, "It starts from childhood, from school itself. Developing talent from a young age shows results." He highlighted the initiative's role in promoting sports culture in India since its inception in 2015. "The SFA School Championships is a great initiative, giving kids a chance to play in top stadiums boosts their morale," he added.
Vineet Kumar, a recipient of the Dhyan Chand Award, and his teammate, goalkeeper Romeo James, echoed Dhyan Chand’s sentiments, asserting that the SFA Championship serves as an excellent platform for young athletes. They advocated for the inclusion of older age groups in the program to further nurture high-level talent, underlining the importance of continued support for young sports enthusiasts.
The SFA Championship is a crucial component of Sports for All’s mission to professionalize and organize grassroots sports across India. This year, the competition features an impressive 14,500 athletes from 545 schools in the Delhi NCR region, participating in 19 different sports across five venues. The championship is designed not only to foster athletic skill but also to instill a culture of sportsmanship and teamwork among young participants.
Special highlights of the championship include "She is Gold" day on October 8, aimed at honoring women's contributions to sports. On this day, 90% of all matches will feature women athletes and officials, showcasing the importance of gender equality in athletics. Following this, October 9 will be celebrated as "Coaches Day," recognizing the invaluable contributions of coaches to the development of young athletes through special matches and events.
Overall, the SFA Championship aims to engage a wide array of young athletes, providing them with opportunities to compete and excel in sports while fostering a sense of community and teamwork. With the support of seasoned athletes and a commitment to grassroots development, the event is poised to make a lasting impact on the future of sports in India.
