His current position in the race is no longer a threat to the overall standings, but he would still be aiming to finish and continue competing for points in the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship, where Dacia is up against major competitors like Toyota and Ford.

Sébastien Loeb's chances of continuing in the 2025 Dakar Rally are still alive after his team, Dacia, lodged an appeal against the FIA's decision to disqualify him from the event on safety grounds. Loeb, one of the most decorated rally drivers in history, was forced out of the rally following a dramatic crash in Stage 3 between Bisha and Al Henankiyah in Saudi Arabia. His Dacia Sandrider was inspected by the FIA's technical stewards, who found that the car's roll cage had been damaged in the incident. As a result, Loeb was not authorized to start Stage 4 on Wednesday.

However, despite this setback, Dacia has contested the FIA's ruling, arguing that while the roll cage had been deformed, it was not critical to the structural integrity of the car and did not compromise the safety of Loeb or his co-driver, Fabian Lurquin. According to Renault, the Dacia Sandriders team believes the damage did not affect the overall safety of the vehicle, which is why they chose to appeal. The team expressed their disappointment over the decision, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority, but they still felt the car was safe to race.

The decision on whether Loeb can return to the rally will now be in the hands of the stewards, who will review the appeal. If the appeal is successful, Loeb could rejoin the Dakar Rally later in the week, although he would miss the crucial Stage 4 between Al Henankiyah and Al’Ula. Even if Loeb does return, his chances of a competitive finish are slim, as he lost over an hour during Stage 3 due to the crash and additional issues. His current position in the race is no longer a threat to the overall standings, but he would still be aiming to finish and continue competing for points in the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship, where Dacia is up against major competitors like Toyota and Ford.

The appeal against Loeb’s disqualification comes amid a challenging year for Dakar’s elite drivers. Loeb became the third high-profile driver to be forced out due to car damage early in the event. Before him, Ford’s Carlos Sainz Sr. was also disqualified after a roll on Stage 2, which left his car upside down and unable to continue. In addition, Laia Sanz, driving for Century CR6-T, was forced to retire after a roll bar was displaced by just 2mm on the first full day of the event, marking her first-ever retirement in Dakar.

The Dakar Rally is one of the most grueling motorsport events in the world, and the challenges faced by drivers like Loeb, Sainz, and Sanz highlight the harsh nature of the competition. With the appeal process underway, there is still hope that Loeb can make a return to the race, but the road to a potential recovery is uncertain. Should Loeb be allowed to re-enter the competition, it would be a significant comeback for the legendary driver, though his time in the race may now be more about personal achievement and perseverance rather than a competitive bid for victory.
