Joey Logano triumphed in a thrilling showdown at Phoenix, securing his third NASCAR Cup Series title in a dramatic final race of the season. Logano, who had been fading in the closing laps, faced a fierce challenge from his Team Penske teammate, Ryan Blaney. Blaney, having worked his way past Hendrick Motorsports drivers Kyle Larson and William Byron, was closing in on Logano fast, slicing away at a 2.3-second margin. However, despite Blaney's relentless pursuit, Logano managed to hold off the challenge, crossing the finish line just 0.330 seconds ahead to clinch the victory.
The race was a true test of endurance and strategy, with Logano showing incredible composure under pressure. Reflecting on his third championship win, Logano expressed his love for the intensity of the playoffs and the team's resilience. "I love the playoffs," he declared. "What a race! What a Team Penske battle there at the end. Had a good restart and was able to get in front of the 12. And he had a lot of long run speed there, and it was all I had there to hold him off."
Logano’s victory marked a historic achievement for Team Penske, who remain undefeated in the current era of NASCAR, having won the last three titles with the new Gen-7 car. Logano acknowledged his team's contribution to his success, emphasizing that while he may not consider himself the best driver, his team’s performance is unmatched. "I’ve got the best team," he said. "I don’t know if I’m the best driver, but I’ve got the best team, and together we’re very well-rounded and can show up when it matters the most."
Blaney, despite coming up short, showed great sportsmanship and determination. After the race, he admitted that he just ran out of time, struggling to make up the ground after Logano's strong restart. “Yeah, just worn out really and just couldn’t quite get there,” Blaney said. “Tried really hard to do so, just the restart didn’t really work out, and just got too far away from me. It took me a while to pass a couple guys and just could never get by Joey.” Blaney went on to express his congratulations to Logano and the entire Team Penske crew for their performance throughout the playoffs. “If we’re going to race somebody, I’m happy it was him for the championship, and happy to be one-two for Roger [Penske, team owner], three in a row for Roger, super amazing, and Ford.”
William Byron finished the race in third, while Tyler Reddick, another title contender, placed sixth. For Blaney, although disappointed by the outcome, the race was still a showcase of Penske’s dominance in NASCAR, with a Penske car winning the championship once again.
The battle between Logano and Blaney was a fitting climax to an intense season, highlighting the competitiveness and resilience of both drivers. For Logano, this championship solidifies his legacy as one of NASCAR's best, and for Team Penske, it continues their unmatched success in the current era of NASCAR racing with the Gen-7 car. With Logano's victory, Penske has now secured three consecutive championships, proving their strength and consistency on the NASCAR circuit. As Logano looks ahead to next season, he and his team will be striving to maintain their position at the top, while Blaney and the rest of the field will be determined to return even stronger.
