“It was a short day, but when we have short days, normally it’s better for me,” he remarked, adding, “I don’t know why, but when I spend more time on track, it’s worse for me.” The younger Marquez also expressed his relief at finding joy in riding again, stating, “Yesterday I said I needed to have fun on the bike again, and today I did.

Marc Marquez showcased his exceptional adaptability at Phillip Island, clocking the fastest time on a curtailed first day of the MotoGP Australian Grand Prix. The day started with the morning FP1 session being canceled due to heavy rain, which set the stage for a tense afternoon practice where riders had to quickly establish competitive times on a newly resurfaced circuit.

As the skies darkened over the picturesque oceanside track, riders faced the possibility of rain at any moment, intensifying the pressure to secure dry lap times. Marquez took full advantage of these circumstances, leading a 1-2 finish for the Marquez family in the second practice session, where he was accompanied by his brother Alex, who also demonstrated impressive performance.

Marquez quickly found his rhythm and was the first to break into the top times, responding effectively to challenges from other riders like Jack Miller (KTM) and Maverick Vinales (Aprilia). He ultimately set his best lap time of 1m27.770s near the end of the session, showcasing his skill in adapting to rapidly changing track conditions.

Reflecting on his performance, Marquez stated, “We can say that today these were my conditions.” He emphasized that one of his strengths lies in quickly adjusting to different circumstances, an ability he honed during his years racing at Phillip Island, where he has previously claimed three MotoGP victories.

In contrast, Alex Marquez, who only entered the top of the timesheets late in the session, finished just over a tenth of a second behind his brother. Despite this, he shared similar sentiments regarding the lost FP1 session, indicating that it provided them both with an edge over their competitors. “It was a short day, but when we have short days, normally it’s better for me,” he remarked, adding, “I don’t know why, but when I spend more time on track, it’s worse for me.”

The younger Marquez also expressed his relief at finding joy in riding again, stating, “Yesterday I said I needed to have fun on the bike again, and today I did. I had a good feeling from the very first lap. The set-up was working, the bike was working, and I was able to find the limit.”

While both brothers enjoyed a successful first day, they remained cautious, acknowledging the challenges that lay ahead. Alex noted that if Saturday proved dry, he anticipated pole times would fall into the 1m26s range, highlighting the importance of testing tire performance in the upcoming sessions.

Marc echoed his brother's concerns, emphasizing the crucial need for tire data, particularly concerning the rear tire, after the loss of FP1. “Tomorrow, the most important thing will be to understand the rear tire,” he explained, indicating that he had only tested the soft compound while observing other riders experimenting with the medium.

Adding another layer of complexity to the competition, the newly resurfaced track received praise from riders for its grip and performance. However, the unpredictability of the weather, with forecasts predicting significant temperature drops and the possibility of rain, compounded the challenges ahead for the teams. The brothers acknowledged that Saturday's practice session would be pivotal in preparing for the race, especially given the intricacies involved in handling the asymmetrical tires required for the Phillip Island circuit.

As the MotoGP community eagerly anticipates the next round of action, all eyes will be on the Marquez brothers as they strive to capitalize on their promising start while navigating the ever-changing dynamics of the race weekend.
