Russell’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, shared insights into the team's challenges over recent races, suggesting that a misalignment with rival teams regarding upgrade schedules has contributed to their performance issues.

Mercedes has embarked on a strategic reassessment of its Formula 1 car plans for 2025, unveiling several necessary changes in response to its struggles since the summer break. The team, which has faced a challenging season with the W15, has taken this opportunity to conduct an in-depth review of its design and performance, particularly as it prepares to develop its W16 model for the upcoming season.

George Russell, one of Mercedes' drivers, highlighted the benefits of the recent three-week hiatus, stating, “These three weeks off have been great because it’s allowed us all to take a step back and reassess the car as a whole – also looking into next year.” He emphasized that this period of reflection has led to the identification of several aspects that require modification before the 2025 season begins.

Russell acknowledged the importance of understanding the fundamentals of the car, noting, “When you’re in the midst of a season, you sometimes don’t have that opportunity to really dig deep into the fundamentals of the car. So that’s been really positive to see.” This thorough examination has fostered optimism within the team as they strive to enhance performance.

In the immediate term, Mercedes is preparing to introduce an upgrade package at the upcoming United States Grand Prix. Russell expressed hope that this upgrade would allow the team to be more competitive relative to their rivals. He explained, “Obviously we reverted with the upgrades that we brought to Spa, so effectively we’re making two steps now with this upgrade. We’re hoping it’s going to have quite an impact.” He aims for the team to be in the mix for qualifying spots and ultimately contend for podium finishes during races.

Russell’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, shared insights into the team's challenges over recent races, suggesting that a misalignment with rival teams regarding upgrade schedules has contributed to their performance issues. “We’ve been a bit out of sequence to the others,” Hamilton noted. “The others have brought upgrades at times when we haven’t. We’re bringing an upgrade here, for example, and some people will bring small pieces, but maybe not everyone will have the same upgrade that we have.”

He further elaborated on the difficulties encountered with the current car setup, indicating that the team has struggled to extract the maximum potential from their existing floor as it has aged over the course of the season. “I think we understand where we’ve veered off, and hopefully this weekend we can start back on a better balance,” Hamilton added, expressing optimism for a turnaround in their performance.

As Mercedes prepares for the remaining races of the season, the focus remains on implementing the necessary changes and upgrades to regain their competitive edge. The team is keenly aware that the road ahead will not be easy, particularly with competitors like McLaren and Lando Norris appearing to have a substantial advantage at this stage. Nonetheless, the recent introspection and forthcoming improvements signal a proactive approach as Mercedes looks to reestablish itself as a dominant force in Formula 1.
