Oscar Piastri, the young McLaren driver, is setting his sights on victory in the Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend, despite the reduced championship hopes of his teammate Lando Norris. With just a few races remaining, Norris still technically has a chance to challenge Max Verstappen for the title, but the odds are heavily stacked against him. Verstappen is on the brink of securing his fourth World Championship, and Norris’ hopes are slim, though mathematically possible. The focus for McLaren, however, is increasingly shifting toward securing second place in the Constructors' Championship, as they currently lead Ferrari by 36 points.
Piastri, while acknowledging Norris' title fight, stated that he would focus on his own race unless team orders require him to assist. “The drivers' championship picture is very slim, and the constructors' championship is certainly not over for us,” Piastri remarked. He added that he was aiming for a win in Las Vegas and was ready to race independently unless there were specific instructions from the team. Piastri has been consistently impressive in his rookie season, and a win in Las Vegas would be a huge boost for both his confidence and McLaren's standing in the championship battle.
During the first practice session in Las Vegas, Max Verstappen faced unexpected difficulties, finishing a surprising 17th, while Norris showed strong form, securing the second-fastest time behind Lewis Hamilton. Piastri, however, ran into a bit of trouble, finishing eighth, but his session was marred by an unusual technical issue when his car wouldn’t shut down after entering the pit lane. Fortunately, the issue was resolved without any significant setbacks.
As McLaren looks to maintain their lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ standings, Norris discussed the importance of teamwork within the team, reflecting on previous instances when Piastri had allowed him to pass during races. Norris emphasized that, while team orders have sometimes dictated positions, the ultimate goal has always been the success of McLaren as a team. “Everything we've done, we've just swapped a position,” Norris explained, referring to their past strategic moves. He also highlighted how their cooperation has benefited both his and Piastri's performances. Norris specifically mentioned races like the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where they worked together for the greater good of the team.
Looking forward, Norris remains confident in their partnership, praising team principal Andrea Stella for ensuring that decisions made during races never negatively impacted the overall team result. “I think Andrea made it very clear from the beginning that we would never do something that would make the team result worse,” Norris said. Both Norris and Piastri are committed to achieving the best possible outcome for McLaren, with Piastri focused on securing a win in Las Vegas and continuing to build on the team's strong results this season. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on McLaren’s performance and their fight for second place in the Constructors' Championship, while Piastri continues to aim for his first Formula 1 victory.
