In a recent statement aimed at addressing the internal turmoil within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), PT Usha, the esteemed President of the IOA and legendary Indian athlete, has robustly dismissed claims made by treasurer Sahdev Yadav regarding alleged financial mismanagement and a purported loss of ₹24 crores linked to a sponsorship agreement with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).

The controversy arose following a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), which flagged what it described as “faulty” sponsorship arrangements that allegedly favored RIL at the expense of the IOA. This report scrutinized a sponsorship agreement signed on August 1, 2022, which designated RIL as the Official Principal Partner of the IOA for several prestigious events, including the Asian Games and the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

The CAG's audit highlighted that the IOA had failed to protect its interests by not amending the sponsorship agreement to comply with recent International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines. These guidelines explicitly prohibit sponsors from acquiring naming rights for National Olympic Committee (NOC) houses. According to the audit report, this oversight led to a financial loss of ₹24 crores for the IOA, raising concerns about the management of sponsorship deals within the organization.

In her rebuttal, PT Usha stated that the allegations stem from deficiencies in the Request for Proposal (RFP) document issued by the previous management of the IOA. "There has been no financial loss to the IOA," Usha declared, emphasizing that the naming rights granted to RIL were underpinned by a flawed RFP that omitted crucial clauses meant to safeguard the organization's interests. Specifically, the absence of a clause stating that the naming rights were "subject to the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Host Territory" proved significant when the IOC introduced new guidelines in June 2023 that prohibited such arrangements.

As the situation developed, RIL sought to renegotiate the terms of their sponsorship agreement, proposing a 50% reduction in the previously agreed hosting fee. Faced with limited options, the IOA chose to enter negotiations to amend the agreement while ensuring it retained a substantial portion of the rights fee. Usha clarified that the additional events granted to RIL in the renegotiated agreement offer minimal visibility compared to high-profile events like the Summer Olympics, Commonwealth Games, or Asian Games. She contended that the CAG’s report inaccurately compared the visibility of these less prominent events to those with considerable exposure.

Furthermore, Usha addressed allegations made by Yadav, who claimed she acted unilaterally without consulting the IOA Executive Council. "These claims are part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish my reputation and discredit the IOA," she asserted. She elaborated that the proposal for renegotiation was circulated among all Executive Council members, and legal counsel was involved throughout the negotiation process. "The Addendum to the agreement was drafted under the guidance of one of India's leading sports lawyers," Usha stated, underscoring the procedural integrity of the discussions.

Despite Usha’s efforts to clarify the situation, tensions within the IOA continue to escalate. In response to the ongoing conflicts, she has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) scheduled for October 25, 2024, to address pressing issues, including the contentious appointment of a CEO. The selection of the CEO has been a point of contention, with some Executive Council members reportedly resisting Usha’s preferred candidate, Raghuram Iyer, who is viewed as critical to the organization’s ambitions, particularly in light of India's interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics.

In her closing remarks, PT Usha reaffirmed her commitment to safeguarding the interests of the IOA and its athletes. She stated, "All decisions taken were in the best interest of the IOA and the Indian athletes, ensuring that no financial loss was incurred." Her statements aim to restore confidence in the management of the IOA and reassure stakeholders that the organization remains focused on its mission to promote sports and support athletes across India.
