As the meeting unfolded, it became apparent that the executive committee members were intent on blocking the appointment of Iyer, despite the previous decision made months ago.

Former sprint queen PT Usha, now serving as the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), found herself embroiled in a tense confrontation with executive committee members during a special meeting held at the Olympic Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday, September 26.

The primary agenda for the meeting was the ratification of CEO Raghuram Iyer, who had been appointed earlier in February 2024. PT Usha aimed to discuss and negotiate Iyer's monthly salary before moving forward with the ratification process. However, the atmosphere quickly turned contentious as members of the executive committee, including Ajay Patel, Sahdev Yadav, Rajalaxmi Singh Deo, Gagan Narang, and Rohit Rajpal, expressed their unwillingness to accommodate her request.

Tensions escalated further when Sahdev Yadav, the treasurer of the IOA, adopted an aggressive stance during the discussions, which particularly irked Usha. It was reported that Usha was displeased with Yadav’s confrontational behavior, adding to the mounting frustrations in the room. As the meeting unfolded, it became apparent that the executive committee members were intent on blocking the appointment of Iyer, despite the previous decision made months ago.

Recognizing the hostile environment and the committee's refusal to engage in constructive dialogue, Usha decided to exit the meeting. Shortly after leaving, she took immediate action by sending a letter to Jerome Poivey at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who had been participating in the meeting online. In her letter, Usha expressed her concerns regarding the behavior of the executive committee members and the implications of their actions on the administration of the IOA.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges within the Indian Olympic Association and raises questions about governance and collaboration among its members. As PT Usha continues her leadership role, her response to this confrontation may set the tone for future interactions and decision-making processes within the organization.

The primary agenda for the meeting was the ratification of CEO Raghuram Iyer, who had been appointed earlier in February 2024.
