PV Sindhu Reaches First-Ever French Open Final, Faces Nemesis An Se Young

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has reached the women's singles final of the French Open 2026 for the first time in her career. The two-time Olympic medallist defeated Japan's Hina Akechi in a thrilling three-game semifinal in Paris on October 24, earning an opportunity to compete for the prestigious title.

Sindhu won the match 21-10, 20-22, 21-16 in 73 minutes. After dominating the opening game, she faced a strong fightback from the Japanese shuttler before regaining control in the deciding game.

The Indian will now meet South Korea's An Se Young, the women's singles world No. 1 and reigning world champion, in Sunday's final. The matchup presents Sindhu with a major challenge against an opponent who has consistently dominated their previous meetings.

Sindhu Battles Through a Three-Game Semifinal

Sindhu began the semifinal confidently, using her attacking shots, reach and court coverage to put Akechi under pressure. She established control early and won the opening game 21-10.

Akechi responded in the second game, improving her consistency and challenging Sindhu in the longer rallies. The Japanese player held her nerve during the closing stages to take the game 22-20, forcing a deciding game.

With a place in the final at stake, Sindhu raised her level in the third game. She combined powerful attacking shots with improved defence and precise net play to create opportunities and force errors from her opponent.

Sindhu eventually closed out the deciding game 21-16, securing a memorable victory and ending Akechi's impressive run in the tournament.

The result underlined Sindhu's ability to recover under pressure and maintain her composure in a demanding knockout match.

A Historic French Open Final for Sindhu

Reaching the final marks an important milestone in Sindhu's career at the French Open. Although she had previously reached the semifinals of the tournament, she had never progressed to the championship match before this edition.

The Indian has enjoyed a mixed season on the international badminton circuit, but her performances in Paris have demonstrated renewed consistency. Her progress through the draw has included victories over several opponents, culminating in the hard-fought semifinal against Akechi.

Sindhu's run also gives her another opportunity to compete for a major title on the BWF World Tour.

The French Open is a Super 750 tournament, one of the major events on the international badminton calendar. A victory in the final would add another significant achievement to Sindhu's decorated career.

An Se Young Awaits in the Final

Sindhu's next opponent is An Se Young, South Korea's world No. 1 and reigning world champion. The Korean has established herself as one of the strongest players in women's singles through her consistency, defensive ability and control of rallies.

An Se Young reached the final by defeating Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 21-12, 21-19 in her semifinal. Her victory extended her remarkable winning streak to 49 matches, highlighting the challenge facing Sindhu.

An Se Young is also seeking another French Open title after winning the tournament in 2019, 2024 and 2025. A victory on Sunday would give her a third consecutive title at the event and her fourth overall.

The Korean's current form makes her a formidable opponent, but Sindhu will have the opportunity to test herself against the world's leading player in a major final.

Sindhu Looks to Overcome Her Head-to-Head Record

The upcoming final is particularly significant because of An Se Young's dominant record against Sindhu. Before the title match, the South Korean had won all 10 of their previous meetings on the international circuit.

That record places additional pressure on the Indian, who will need to combine strong attacking play with consistent defence and careful shot selection.

Against a player known for retrieving difficult shots and extending rallies, Sindhu will need to choose her attacking moments wisely. Maintaining control of the pace and limiting unforced errors could be crucial.

Sindhu has already demonstrated in the semifinal that she can recover after losing a game. Repeating that resilience against the world No. 1, however, will require a high level of performance throughout the match.

The final also offers her an opportunity to end the losing streak and register a significant victory against one of the strongest players in the sport.

Another Super 750 Title Within Reach

Sindhu has already won the Japan Open in 2026, defeating Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in the final. That victory marked an important achievement in her season and strengthened her position among the leading players on the women's singles circuit.

Reaching the French Open final gives her another chance to win a Super 750 title in the same year.

The tournament has also provided Sindhu with valuable competitive experience ahead of the remaining international events of the season. A strong performance against An Se Young would be significant regardless of the final result, given the Korean's current form and winning record.

For Indian badminton fans, Sindhu's qualification represents an important moment in a tournament where several other Indian players have already exited.

The Korean's current form makes her a formidable opponent, but Sindhu will have the opportunity to test herself against the world's leading player in a major final.
