The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, has approved the participation of Pakistan’s senior and junior men’s hockey teams in two upcoming international tournaments to be held in India — the Asia Cup and the Junior Hockey World Cup. The approval has been granted after consultations with relevant departments, including the Ministry of External Affairs and Home Affairs, according to official sources.
The Asia Cup is scheduled to be hosted in Chennai later this year, while the Junior Hockey World Cup is set to take place in Bhubaneswar. Both tournaments are major fixtures in the international hockey calendar and feature participation from leading Asian and global teams. Pakistan’s presence in these tournaments was subject to official clearance due to the sensitive diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Officials familiar with the development confirmed that the decision aligns with India’s international obligations as a host nation. It is standard practice for such clearances to be obtained in advance, particularly when participants come from countries with limited diplomatic engagement. The move is seen as a commitment by India to keep sports and politics separate, in line with the principles of international sporting bodies such as the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF).
Security protocols are expected to be strengthened for the Pakistani teams during their stay in India. Host cities are working closely with central and state security agencies to ensure a safe and incident-free experience for all participating nations. Organizing committees have also been advised to make logistical arrangements that accommodate the requirements of international athletes.
The decision has been welcomed by the sporting community, with many emphasizing the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and cross-border interaction in the field of athletics. Several former Indian and Pakistani hockey players have spoken positively about the participation of both countries in such tournaments, noting that such events offer an opportunity to build mutual respect and foster healthy competition.
India and Pakistan share a long-standing and intense rivalry in hockey, having faced each other in numerous historic matches at the Olympic Games, World Cups, and continental tournaments. While bilateral hockey series between the two nations have remained suspended for many years, multi-nation events offer a rare platform for teams from both sides to compete on neutral sporting grounds.
Officials from Hockey India stated that they will extend all necessary support to ensure the smooth conduct of the tournaments. The presence of all qualified teams, including Pakistan, is essential for maintaining the credibility and competitiveness of the events.
As preparations move forward, the focus remains on promoting excellence in the sport while upholding the spirit of international cooperation. The Asia Cup and Junior Hockey World Cup are expected to attract significant viewership and engagement from fans, further boosting the profile of field hockey in the region.
