Thriston Lawrence is setting his sights on a major milestone at the DP World Tour Championship as he aims to surpass Rory McIlroy and claim the prestigious Race to Dubai title. Lawrence, who has been a consistent performer on the DP World Tour, is the only player with a chance to prevent McIlroy from clinching the title, which would mark his sixth Race to Dubai victory, placing him just two behind Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight titles.
To take the title, Lawrence needs a win at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, with the added condition that McIlroy must finish tied for 11th place or lower. McIlroy, who finished third at the recent Abu Dhabi Championship, is currently leading the standings, with Lawrence trailing by 1,785 points. With 2,000 points available to the winner in Dubai, Lawrence’s path to victory is clear: win and hope McIlroy falters.
This season has been one of near-misses for Lawrence, who has finished runner-up five times, including at The Open and the BMW PGA Championship, in addition to five top-10 finishes. While Lawrence has yet to secure a victory this season, his consistency has been impressive, and his efforts have pushed him into the world’s top 50 rankings. His most recent win came on the Sunshine Tour in 2024, and he’s looking to capitalize on his form as he heads into the final event of the season.
Reflecting on his chances, Lawrence expressed his excitement and gratitude during a pre-tournament press conference. “It's nice to have a chance,” Lawrence said. “It’s going to take a lot, but just incredible to have an opportunity. I’m very grateful just to be inside the top 50 to be able to compete this week.” Lawrence’s focus is on the challenge ahead, knowing that he has to perform at his best in Dubai to have any chance of claiming the Race to Dubai title.
Lawrence’s rise to prominence on the DP World Tour has been marked by remarkable consistency over recent seasons. After winning twice during each of his first two seasons, he has become a staple in the top tier of the sport, proving that he is a force to be reckoned with. While his primary goal this year is to secure a win, the opportunity to challenge McIlroy for the Race to Dubai title has added another layer of motivation.
With his growth as a player and the chance to compete on the biggest stage, Lawrence is eager to test himself against one of golf’s greats in McIlroy. The stakes are high, but Lawrence’s determination and belief in his game will ensure that he will be a tough competitor in Dubai, ready to make the most of his opportunity.
