Carlos Alcaraz continued his title defence at the 2026 US Open by overcoming Portugal’s Jaime Faria in a four set second round match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The defending champion eventually secured a 4 6, 6 0, 6 3, 6 2 victory after initially struggling to find his rhythm. The result sent Alcaraz into the third round and extended his impressive record at the US Open to 26 wins from 29 matches.
Alcaraz entered the tournament with considerable attention surrounding his return to competitive tennis. The Spanish star had been sidelined for nearly five months because of a wrist injury suffered earlier in the season. Statistics from the match reflected Alcaraz’s improved performance after the first set. He produced 43 winners compared with Faria’s 27 and converted seven of 12 break point opportunities. Faria had seven break point chances but converted only two.
The victory is significant for Alcaraz because it represents another positive step in his return from injury. A long absence can affect timing, movement and match rhythm, particularly at a Grand Slam tournament where opponents are capable of exploiting any weakness.
Alcaraz’s first two matches in New York have therefore provided valuable competitive experience. His opening victory over Safiullin was relatively straightforward, while the match against Faria required him to respond after losing a set.
The Spaniard’s reaction to the difficult opening was particularly important. Rather than allowing the first set to affect his confidence, he adjusted his approach and quickly established control. For Alcaraz, the larger objective remains defending his US Open title. The tournament is still in its early stages, and tougher opponents are expected as the competition progresses.
The recovery from injury will also remain an important storyline throughout the tournament. While Alcaraz has shown that he can win matches again, the physical demands increase with every round.
