Despite facing strong competition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Yogesh Kumar, Phogat maintained a resilient approach throughout the campaign.

Vinesh Phogat, the former Indian wrestling star, marked a significant milestone in her political career by winning the Julana constituency in the Haryana Legislative Assembly election, held on October 8. Representing the Indian National Congress (INC), Phogat's victory showcases her successful transition from a celebrated sports career to the political arena. This win adds a new chapter to her life, following her earlier achievements as one of India's top wrestlers.

Phogat's entry into politics came after a notable setback at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she was disqualified on the day of her final match due to weight issues in her category. The disqualification led to a legal dispute with the Olympic committee, which Phogat ultimately lost. However, this setback did not deter her. Soon after returning to India, she joined the Indian National Congress, plunging into the political field with a focus on her home state of Haryana.

The Julana constituency, about 80 kilometers from her hometown in Balali, Charkhi Dadri district, became the battleground for Phogat's political debut. Her campaign was marked by passionate appeals to the local electorate, highlighting her commitment to social change and development in the region. Despite facing strong competition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Yogesh Kumar, Phogat maintained a resilient approach throughout the campaign.

In the initial phases of counting, Phogat saw her lead fluctuate as the BJP candidate gained ground. However, after the sixth round of counting, she made a decisive comeback, ultimately winning the seat by a margin of 6,015 votes. Phogat secured 65,080 votes, while her rival, Yogesh Kumar, managed 59,065 votes.

While Phogat's victory in Julana is a personal triumph, the larger political picture in Haryana remains in favor of the BJP, which is poised to retain power with a commanding lead across the state. Despite the INC's hopes for a strong performance in the elections, exit polls and early trends suggest the BJP is on track to form the government again.

Vinesh Phogat’s foray into politics and her successful election win have brought her into the spotlight as a rising political figure in Haryana, signaling the start of a new journey after her illustrious wrestling career.
