Russell pointed out that his strong qualifying record against previous teammates, including Hamilton, had been consistent even before the introduction of the new generation of cars.

George Russell has expressed that his natural driving style has been a key factor in his excellent qualifying performances with the current generation of Formula 1 cars. The British driver’s ability to adapt to the 18-inch Pirelli tyres and the ground-effect cars has been evident in his impressive qualifying results, most notably his 24-6 split over his former teammate Lewis Hamilton in the 2024 season. Additionally, Russell finished ahead of the seven-time world champion in the drivers’ standings, further highlighting his rise as a consistent performer.

In an interview with select media, including Motorsport.com, Russell discussed how his driving style seems to be a good match for the technical demands of the current Formula 1 setup. He believes that his approach has worked well with the current generation of cars, particularly when it comes to extracting the maximum performance from the tyres, which is crucial for a successful qualifying run. “I think probably my natural driving style has worked well in these cars,” Russell said, acknowledging his success with the current package.

However, the 25-year-old driver was keen to avoid overstating the influence of the current car generation on his success. Russell pointed out that his strong qualifying record against previous teammates, including Hamilton, had been consistent even before the introduction of the new generation of cars. “My qualifying record against my team-mates in the previous generation was good and in every category my qualifying records have been strong,” he added.

Russell also took care to downplay any direct correlation between his driving style and the specifics of the current F1 cars. "I don’t think there’s anything particular with this generation," he remarked, while also noting that his qualifying performance has been particularly highlighted due to the strong competition within the Mercedes team. “Obviously, Lewis has been my toughest team-mate, so I think that’s why it’s been highlighted a bit more.”

One of the key elements of Russell’s driving style that has contributed to his qualifying success is his minimalist approach, which allows him to manage the Pirelli rubber efficiently. This helps him get the most out of the tyres during one-lap runs, which is critical in qualifying sessions where performance needs to be maximized in short bursts. His ability to extract the optimal performance from the tyres is a significant asset in the current F1 setup, where tyre management is crucial to achieving a strong qualifying position.

Overall, while Russell modestly downplays the idea that the current generation of cars is a perfect fit for his driving style, it's clear that his understanding of the car's technical needs, particularly in terms of tyre usage, has played a significant role in his success on the grid. As the 2024 season progresses, Russell’s consistency in qualifying further solidifies his reputation as one of the most talented drivers on the grid. With his growing experience and the backing of Mercedes, he is poised for continued success in both qualifying and race performance.

“My qualifying record against my team-mates in the previous generation was good and in every category my qualifying records have been strong,” he added.
