As heavy rains continue to batter Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, local authorities have declared school closures in several regions to ensure the safety of students. The persistent downpour has disrupted normal life, prompting immediate action from district officials to minimize the impact of the weather on education.
In Puducherry, Education Minister Namachivayam announced the closure of all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal on Friday due to the adverse weather conditions. The decision came after continuous rainfall was predicted to affect the region, making it unsafe for students to attend classes. Similarly, in Madurai, District Collector M C Sangeetha declared a holiday for all schools in the district for Friday. The decision was made to prevent any risks associated with the ongoing rainfall, which has been intense in various parts of the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather warnings, including yellow alerts for several districts in Tamil Nadu. According to the IMD, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue in districts like Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Kanyakumari. The weather department has forecast that the rains will persist until December 16. These districts are expected to experience more showers, which could cause waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localized flooding in certain areas.
In Chennai, the weather has remained overcast with light to moderate rain in some parts. However, the city is not expected to experience the same level of heavy rainfall as the southern districts. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for parts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Kanyakumari districts, indicating that these areas are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The authorities are monitoring the weather closely, with precautions being taken to manage the situation. In some regions, local water bodies are nearing capacity, and teams have been deployed to address any potential flooding issues. The IMD has advised residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of heavy rainfall.
With the rainfall expected to continue until mid-December, it is important for residents to stay updated with the latest weather reports and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities. The heavy rain has also affected transportation, with certain routes experiencing delays and disruptions. The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and flooding.
In addition to the impact on daily life, the ongoing rains are also expected to provide some relief to the state’s agricultural sector, which has faced dry conditions in the past few months. However, the immediate concern is the risk of flooding and waterlogging, which could hamper essential services in the affected districts.
As the situation develops, local authorities are continuing to monitor the weather patterns closely and make necessary adjustments to ensure public safety. Schools are expected to remain closed in certain districts until further notice, and students are advised to stay indoors until it is safe to resume normal activities.
