Torrential Rainfall Disrupts Daily Life in Puducherry

Puducherry witnessed intense and continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours, severely affecting normal life and raising concerns about urban preparedness.

Puducherry witnessed intense and continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours, severely affecting normal life and raising concerns about urban preparedness. Several parts of the Union Territory experienced waterlogging, traffic congestion, and power outages as a result of the heavy downpour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, predicting continued rainfall in the coming days.

The unexpected and sustained nature of the rainfall took many residents by surprise. Streets in areas such as Villianur, Lawspet, and Mudaliarpet were inundated, with knee-deep water making vehicular movement difficult. Many residents remained indoors as schools were closed and public transport services were temporarily disrupted.

Local authorities have responded by mobilizing disaster management teams to monitor the situation in flood-prone areas. Pumps were deployed in critical zones to remove stagnant water, and police personnel were seen redirecting traffic to less congested routes. Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy held an emergency meeting with the district administration to review the preparedness and urged officials to prioritize public safety.

According to IMD officials, the heavy rainfall is the result of an active low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is influencing weather patterns in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. “The current weather system is likely to persist for another 48 hours, with more rainfall expected. Residents are advised to follow updates from official channels and avoid venturing into flooded areas,” said an IMD spokesperson.

Hospitals and emergency services have been put on high alert, while helplines have been made available to assist the public. Several power outages were reported, but electricity board officials have assured swift restoration of services. The fire and rescue department has also been deployed in vulnerable neighborhoods to assist in any evacuation, if required.

Environmentalists have pointed out that inadequate urban planning and clogged drainage systems have exacerbated the situation. “This is not the first time that Puducherry has experienced flooding after rain. Proper infrastructure and regular maintenance are essential to prevent such recurring issues,” said Dr. Priya Kumar, an urban planning expert.

Public reaction to the rain has been mixed. While some residents welcomed the much-needed rainfall after weeks of heat, many expressed frustration over the lack of civic preparedness. Social media platforms were filled with images and videos showing waterlogged streets, submerged vehicles, and residents wading through water.

In the coming days, the administration is expected to assess the extent of the damage and initiate compensation procedures for those affected. Relief camps are also being considered for families living in low-lying and vulnerable areas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have assured citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to manage the crisis. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official advisories until the weather conditions improve.
