BMW Motorrad has officially confirmed that it will discontinue its 310cc motorcycle series, marking the end of an era for the brand’s entry-level offerings. The G 310 R and G 310 GS, which were developed in collaboration with TVS Motor Company and manufactured in India, will be phased out as BMW prepares to introduce an all-new 450cc parallel-twin platform.
The decision forms part of BMW Motorrad’s global product realignment strategy, aimed at modernising its portfolio and responding to changing market dynamics. The 310 series played a crucial role in expanding BMW’s reach in emerging markets, offering riders access to the brand at a relatively affordable price point while maintaining BMW’s design and engineering standards.
However, with increasing competition and evolving emission and performance regulations, BMW is now shifting focus to a more advanced and versatile middleweight segment. The upcoming 450cc twin-cylinder motorcycles are expected to deliver higher power output, smoother performance, and improved touring and urban riding capabilities compared to the outgoing 310 models.
BMW has already showcased a concept version of its 450cc platform, hinting at modern styling, lightweight construction, and advanced electronics. The new models are likely to feature ride-by-wire throttle, multiple riding modes, traction control, and improved braking systems. These upgrades are expected to appeal to riders looking for a balance between everyday usability and long-distance touring performance.
In India, the BMW G 310 series gained popularity among premium motorcycle buyers seeking a globally recognised brand with local manufacturing benefits. The bikes were praised for their build quality, comfort, and refinement, though pricing remained a concern for some buyers in the highly competitive sub-500cc segment.
The transition to the 450cc lineup may result in a higher price bracket, but BMW is expected to position the new motorcycles competitively by leveraging its partnership with TVS for production and development. Industry observers believe that the new platform could also give rise to multiple body styles, including naked roadsters, adventure tourers, and sport-oriented models.
BMW Motorrad has not yet announced a specific timeline for the complete discontinuation of the 310 series or the official launch dates of the 450cc models. However, reports suggest that the transition will take place gradually, with new models being introduced once regulatory approvals and production readiness are in place.
For existing owners of the BMW 310 series, the company has assured continued service support, spare parts availability, and warranty coverage as per standard policy. This ensures that current customers will not be affected by the product transition.
The move to replace the 310 series with a more powerful 450cc twin lineup highlights BMW Motorrad’s long-term vision to strengthen its presence in the premium mid-capacity motorcycle segment while offering technologically advanced products tailored to global and Indian markets.
