Factors Driving Growth Affordability and Accessibility: Scooters remain a cost-effective option for daily commuters, with attractive financing options making them accessible to middle-income households.

The Indian two-wheeler industry has achieved a significant milestone as the scooter segment witnessed a robust 17% growth in sales during the financial year 2024-25 (FY2025). According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), a total of 68.53 lakh scooter units were sold, marking a major recovery and expansion of the segment.

This surge is attributed to various contributing factors such as increased urban mobility needs, improved economic conditions, and a resurgence in rural demand. Leading companies such as Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, TVS Motor Company, and Suzuki Motorcycle India have reported strong performances across both ICE (internal combustion engine) and EV (electric vehicle) categories.

Market Performance & Segment Leaders

Honda, which leads the market with its ever-popular Activa series, contributed a significant share to the sales figures. TVS’s Jupiter and Ntorq models, along with Suzuki’s Access 125, also played a vital role in driving the industry forward.

Another notable trend is the increased adoption of electric scooters, led by companies such as Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and Bajaj Chetak. While ICE scooters still dominate the market, EVs have gained considerable traction, particularly in metro cities and tier-1 towns.

 Factors Driving Growth

Affordability and Accessibility: Scooters remain a cost-effective option for daily commuters, with attractive financing options making them accessible to middle-income households.

Increased Female Ridership: Growing female participation in the workforce and education has boosted scooter sales, particularly in the 100-125cc segment.

Fuel Efficiency and Convenience: Lightweight designs and fuel efficiency continue to appeal to younger and urban riders.

Rural Expansion: Companies have ramped up dealer networks and after-sales services in smaller towns, leading to deeper market penetration.

 Outlook for FY2026

Industry experts forecast continued double-digit growth in the scooter segment in FY2026, fueled by rising interest in electric mobility, government subsidies on EVs, and rising disposable incomes. The upcoming festive season is expected to further boost sales across regions.

“Scooters are no longer just urban mobility vehicles. Their acceptance in rural markets and rising demand for electric variants show how adaptable this segment has become,” said Ramesh Goyal, an auto sector analyst.

With innovation and customer demand both steering the sector, the Indian scooter market looks geared for a dynamic and sustained growth trajectory in the years ahead.
