New Delhi May 25
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is preparing to introduce what is expected to be India’s first 100 percent ethanol compatible flex fuel car on June 5 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s shift toward cleaner and alternative fuel technologies.
The announcement regarding the upcoming vehicle was highlighted by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari during a public event in New Delhi. The development has generated strong interest within the automobile industry as India continues to focus on reducing dependency on fossil fuels and increasing the adoption of renewable energy sources in transportation.
Ethanol based flex fuel vehicles are designed to run on fuel blends with a high percentage of ethanol, which is derived from renewable agricultural sources. These vehicles are considered more environmentally friendly compared to conventional petrol powered engines because they can help reduce carbon emissions and support cleaner energy usage.
Industry experts believe that the introduction of a 100 percent ethanol compatible vehicle could play an important role in strengthening India’s biofuel ecosystem. It may also support farmers by increasing demand for ethanol produced from crops such as sugarcane and other biomass sources.
The Indian government has been actively promoting ethanol blending in petrol as part of its long term energy strategy. This initiative aims to reduce crude oil imports, improve energy security and support sustainable development goals.
If launched as planned, the new model from Maruti Suzuki India Limited would represent a major advancement in India’s automobile technology landscape. It could also encourage other manufacturers to develop similar alternative fuel vehicles for the domestic market.
Automobile analysts note that flex fuel technology has already been adopted in several international markets. However, widespread adoption in India has been limited so far due to infrastructure challenges and fuel availability constraints. The introduction of such a vehicle could accelerate the development of ethanol distribution networks across the country.
The initiative is also aligned with India’s broader climate and energy goals, which focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of renewable energy in the transportation sector.
Experts say that consumer acceptance will depend on factors such as fuel pricing, vehicle performance, maintenance costs and availability of ethanol fuel stations. Government support and policy incentives may also play a key role in encouraging adoption.
Nitin Gadkari has been a strong advocate of alternative fuels and electric mobility in India. His emphasis on ethanol blending and green mobility solutions has contributed to increased attention on biofuel based transportation.
The upcoming launch, if officially confirmed, could mark a turning point in India’s automotive industry by introducing a mainstream vehicle capable of running on a fully ethanol based fuel system. Industry stakeholders are closely watching the development as it could influence future product strategies across major automobile manufacturers.
More official details regarding specifications, pricing and availability are expected closer to the launch date.
