Mercedes-Benz is set to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in India with the launch of the new GLC Electric on November 4, 2026. The luxury electric SUV will arrive in the Indian market as the GLC 400 4MATIC and will be locally assembled at Mercedes-Benz India's manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune.
The upcoming electric SUV is based on the latest generation of the GLC family and will be positioned alongside the existing internal combustion engine GLC in the Indian market. Mercedes-Benz has already confirmed that bookings for the electric SUV will begin in the first week of October.
The GLC Electric is an important addition to Mercedes-Benz India's growing electric vehicle portfolio. The company is bringing the model to India relatively soon after its international introduction. Mercedes-Benz has said that the India-bound model will arrive within around six months of sales beginning in Europe, making it one of the fastest global Mercedes-Benz models to reach India in locally assembled form.
For the Indian market, Mercedes-Benz will initially offer the standard-wheelbase GLC 400 4MATIC. The longer-wheelbase version available in certain international markets, including China, is not currently confirmed for India.
The India-spec GLC Electric will use a 94kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt, or NMC, battery pack. Power will come from two electric motors, with one motor driving each axle. This gives the SUV an all-wheel-drive system and a combined output of around 489bhp and 800Nm of torque.
The performance figures are also notable for a luxury electric SUV of this size. Mercedes-Benz claims that the GLC 400 4MATIC can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in approximately 4.3 seconds. Its top speed is rated at 210kmph in the international specification.
The biggest talking point for many Indian buyers will be the claimed driving range. Mercedes-Benz states that the GLC Electric can deliver a WLTP range of up to 715km on a full charge. The company's technical documentation gives a WLTP range band of 568km to 715km, depending on the configuration and operating conditions. Actual range can vary based on driving style, weather, road conditions, vehicle load, tyre specifications and use of features such as air conditioning.
The electric GLC uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, which enables high-speed DC charging. The SUV supports DC fast charging at up to 330kW. Mercedes-Benz claims that the battery can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in around 22 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
The company also claims that approximately 300km of additional WLTP range can be added in about 10 minutes using a sufficiently powerful DC fast charger. Charging times can vary depending on the charger, battery temperature, state of charge and other conditions.
The GLC Electric is larger than the conventional GLC currently sold in India. It measures 4,845mm in length, 1,913mm in width and 1,644mm in height. Its wheelbase measures 2,972mm, which is 84mm longer than the wheelbase of the combustion-powered GLC.
The longer wheelbase provides additional space for passengers. Mercedes-Benz claims that the electric model offers an increase in rear legroom compared with the conventional GLC. The SUV continues to have a five-seat cabin.
Storage capacity is another area where the electric GLC offers practical advantages. The SUV provides around 570 litres of boot space, which can increase to approximately 1,740 litres when the rear seats are folded. It also features a front luggage compartment with around 128 litres of additional storage space.
The design of the GLC Electric is noticeably different from the conventional petrol-powered model. At the front, the SUV features a large illuminated grille with Mercedes-Benz's latest star-inspired design elements. The front lighting incorporates distinctive star-shaped daytime running lights and LED headlamps.
The side profile is relatively clean, with flush-fitting door handles and a smooth body design intended to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Depending on the specification, the electric GLC can be equipped with alloy wheels measuring up to 21 inches.
At the rear, the SUV gets star-shaped LED tail-lamps connected by a gloss-black element. The overall design combines the familiar proportions of the GLC with Mercedes-Benz's newer electric vehicle styling language.
The cabin is expected to be one of the biggest highlights of the new model. The international GLC Electric features a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen that stretches across much of the dashboard. Mercedes-Benz describes it as the largest display it has fitted to a production vehicle.
The screen combines the driver's display, central infotainment system and front passenger display into one continuous digital panel. It runs Mercedes-Benz's latest MBUX software and includes an AI-powered voice assistant.
Despite the large digital display, Mercedes-Benz has retained physical controls for several important functions. The steering wheel and centre console include conventional controls, providing an alternative to touchscreen-only operation.
The electric GLC also comes with a range of premium equipment depending on specification. Expected features include a panoramic glass roof, advanced climate control, wireless smartphone charging, connected-car functions and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems.
Rear-wheel steering is another important feature. It helps improve manoeuvrability at lower speeds and stability at higher speeds. The international GLC Electric also offers air suspension and other chassis technologies depending on the variant and market.
Safety and driver assistance will be an important part of the India-spec model. The GLC Electric is expected to offer advanced driver assistance features, including Level 2 assistance technologies in the relevant configuration. Exact India-specific equipment and feature availability will be confirmed closer to the launch.
Mercedes-Benz's decision to locally assemble the GLC Electric is also significant for the Indian market. The SUV will be assembled at the company's Chakan facility near Pune. Local assembly could help Mercedes-Benz position the model more competitively than a fully imported electric vehicle, although the final pricing will depend on the company's pricing strategy and equipment levels.
Mercedes-Benz has not yet announced the official India price of the GLC Electric. Current industry estimates place the SUV in the Rs 80 lakh to Rs 90 lakh ex-showroom range, while some reports expect pricing closer to Rs 80 lakh to Rs 85 lakh. These figures are estimates and should not be treated as the final manufacturer price.
The GLC Electric will compete in India's premium electric SUV market. Its combination of a claimed 715km WLTP range, dual-motor all-wheel drive, fast charging and advanced cabin technology will put it among the more significant luxury EV launches expected in India this year.
The SUV will also be sold alongside the existing petrol-powered GLC rather than replacing it immediately. This gives Mercedes-Benz customers the option of choosing between an internal combustion powertrain and a fully electric version of the company's popular midsize luxury SUV.
For Indian customers, the 94kWh battery and 715km claimed WLTP range are likely to be among the most important specifications. However, buyers should remember that WLTP figures are generated under standardised testing conditions and real-world range can be lower depending on several factors.
Charging infrastructure will also play an important role in the ownership experience. While the GLC Electric supports very high-speed DC charging, the actual charging speed will depend on the capacity of the charging station. Mercedes-Benz's claimed 330kW maximum charging capability therefore cannot be achieved at every public charging location.
The November 4 launch will reveal the final India-specific pricing, equipment list and variant details. Mercedes-Benz has currently confirmed the GLC 400 4MATIC as the initial India specification.
