Tata Motors’ new compact sedan, the Tata Aeris, was spotted at a dealership ahead of its scheduled India launch on September 25, 2026. The new model replaces the Tata Tigor in the company’s passenger vehicle portfolio and is positioned above the Tiago hatchback. Images of production-spec vehicles reaching dealerships have provided additional details about the lower-spec variants and powertrain options before the official launch.
The Tata Aeris is part of Tata Motors’ renewed approach to the sub-four-metre sedan segment. The model carries significant design changes compared with the outgoing Tigor and gets a revised exterior, updated cabin and a different equipment package. The Aeris is expected to compete in a segment that includes models such as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze.
One of the most notable details from the dealership sighting is the lower-spec version of the Aeris. The vehicle spotted at the dealership was a CNG variant finished in grey. Instead of alloy wheels, this version was equipped with wheel covers. The design is similar to the type of wheel covers used on entry-level versions of the Tiago. This indicates that Tata Motors will differentiate the Aeris variants through exterior equipment and wheel designs.
The lower-spec version also appears to feature a slightly different tail-lamp design. This provides another visual distinction between variants of the Aeris. Higher-spec versions are expected to receive more premium exterior equipment, including alloy wheels and additional styling elements.
The Aeris will use Tata Motors’ 1.2-litre petrol engine. The engine is also available with CNG, giving customers a choice between conventional petrol and factory-fitted CNG powertrains. According to launch-day specifications reported by CarWale, the petrol version produces 86bhp and 113Nm of torque, while the CNG version produces 75bhp and 96Nm. Both powertrains are available with five-speed manual and five-speed AMT transmissions.
The use of both petrol and CNG options gives the Aeris a broader powertrain range within the compact sedan segment. The CNG version is particularly relevant for buyers looking for a factory-fitted alternative to petrol. Tata Motors is also using its twin-cylinder CNG technology in the Aeris, allowing the company to retain usable boot space while accommodating the CNG system.
The exterior design of the Aeris is significantly different from the outgoing Tigor. The front section gets revised lighting elements and a redesigned bumper. The headlamp arrangement has similarities with the recently updated Tiago, while the sedan receives its own front-end treatment.
At the rear, the Aeris features revised tail lamps and a redesigned boot section. The interior has also received substantial changes. Tata Motors has introduced a dashboard layout influenced by the newer Tiago, along with a two-spoke steering wheel and digital displays. The cabin features a large touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster. Other features revealed before the launch include wireless charging, cruise control, automatic climate control and a 360-degree camera.
The Aeris also gets a rotary selector on automatic variants, along with physical controls for the climate-control system. Other reported equipment includes Type-C USB ports, rear air-conditioning vents and electrically adjustable and foldable outside rear-view mirrors. Equipment availability will vary according to the variant.
The positioning of the Aeris above the Tiago is another important part of Tata Motors’ strategy. While both models share certain design and engineering elements, the Aeris provides a sedan body style and additional boot space. The model is intended to give Tata Motors a stronger presence in the compact sedan market after the Tigor.
