Gold prices in India moved higher on Monday, August 3, 2026, tracking gains in international bullion markets and continued demand for safe-haven assets. Investors remained cautious amid ongoing geopolitical developments and uncertainty in global financial markets, leading to increased buying interest in precious metals.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures opened nearly 0.3 percent higher, trading around Rs 1.43 lakh per 10 grams during the opening session. Analysts attributed the positive movement to firm global gold prices, a relatively stable US dollar, and sustained demand from investors seeking protection against market volatility.
In the retail market, gold prices also witnessed an upward revision across major cities in India. According to market data, the price of 24 Karat gold stood at around Rs 14,422 per gram at the national level, while 22 Karat gold was priced at approximately Rs 13,220 per gram. The rate for 18 Karat gold was around Rs 10,816 per gram, although prices varied slightly depending on local taxes, transportation costs, and jeweller margins.
Among major metropolitan cities, Chennai recorded the highest retail prices. The price of 24 Karat gold in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy, and several other Tamil Nadu cities was Rs 14,460 per gram. The corresponding price for 22 Karat gold stood at Rs 13,255 per gram, while 18 Karat gold was priced at Rs 11,034 per gram.
In Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Pune, and several other cities, 24 Karat gold was priced at Rs 14,422 per gram, with 22 Karat gold available at Rs 13,220 per gram and 18 Karat gold at Rs 10,816 per gram.
In Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Ayodhya, 24 Karat gold traded at approximately Rs 14,437 per gram. The 22 Karat price stood at Rs 13,235 per gram, while 18 Karat gold was available at Rs 10,831 per gram.
Other cities including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Indore, Bhopal, Surat, and Rajkot recorded marginally different prices because of local market conditions. However, the overall trend remained positive across the country.
Market experts believe gold continues to receive support from global economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and expectations regarding future monetary policy decisions by major central banks. Investors often increase their allocation to gold during periods of uncertainty because it is traditionally viewed as a store of value and a defensive investment.
Another factor influencing gold prices is the movement of the US dollar and global bond yields. Since gold is internationally traded in US dollars, fluctuations in the currency often have a direct impact on bullion prices. Lower bond yields and expectations of stable interest rates generally support higher gold prices by improving the appeal of non-interest-bearing assets such as gold.
Domestic demand also plays an important role in determining retail prices. India remains one of the world's largest consumers of gold, with demand increasing during festivals, weddings, and other traditional occasions. Jewellers across the country are closely monitoring price movements as the festive season approaches.
Industry experts note that retail buyers should compare prices among reputed jewellers and verify hallmark certification before making any purchase. Hallmarked gold certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards provides assurance regarding purity and quality, helping consumers make informed buying decisions.
Investors considering gold as part of their financial portfolio may also evaluate alternatives such as Gold Exchange Traded Funds, Sovereign Gold Bonds, and digital gold products. These investment options provide exposure to gold prices without requiring physical storage.
Market analysts expect gold prices to remain sensitive to global economic developments, inflation trends, central bank policies, and geopolitical events in the coming weeks. While short-term fluctuations are likely, many experts continue to view gold as an important asset for portfolio diversification and long-term wealth preservation.
