Despite the decline in stock price, Avenue Supermarts remains a dominant player in the Indian retail market, continuing to expand its presence across the country.

Shares of DMart, the retail arm of Avenue Supermarts, dropped by 3% on January 13th after the company reported a miss on its Q3 earnings estimates. The stock opened at Rs. 3,501 and fell to an intraday low of Rs. 3,469, mirroring the broader market's downturn. However, DMart's shares have experienced a steady decline over the last five trading sessions.

Avenue Supermarts, which operates DMart, released its earnings for the third quarter of FY25 on January 11th. The company posted total revenue of Rs. 15,565 crore for the quarter, reflecting a 17.5% year-on-year growth. Despite this healthy revenue increase, the Profit After Tax (PAT) or net profit saw a more modest rise of 6.5%, reaching Rs. 785 crore. The company's Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) also grew by 10.2%, totaling Rs. 1,235 crore, highlighting improved operational efficiency.

The Basic Earnings Per Share (EPS) for the quarter was Rs. 12.06, a slight increase from Rs. 11.32 in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, indicating improved profitability on a per-share basis. DMart’s expansion continued, with 10 new stores opened during the December quarter and 22 new stores launched in the first nine months of FY25, contributing to its growing footprint in the retail market.

In addition to the financial report, the company made a significant leadership announcement. Anshul Asawa will be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer Designate and Senior Managerial Personnel, effective March 15, 2025. He will succeed Ignatius Navil Noronha, the current Managing Director, after Mr. Noronha completes his five-year term, which ends on January 31, 2026. The leadership transition has been a key topic of discussion among investors and market analysts, given its potential impact on the company’s future strategies and growth.

Despite the decline in stock price, Avenue Supermarts remains a dominant player in the Indian retail market, continuing to expand its presence across the country. However, the mixed earnings report and leadership changes have led to uncertainty in the short term, with investors keenly observing the company’s next steps and how it adapts to the challenges ahead.
