Bengaluru: Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant and a major assembler of Apple iPhones, has officially begun constructing dormitories for workers at its upcoming manufacturing facility near Bengaluru, Karnataka. The development marks a major step in the establishment of a 300-acre state-of-the-art iPhone production campus, which is projected to employ up to 40,000 workers upon completion.

Located in Devanahalli near the Kempegowda International Airport, the facility is one of the largest electronics manufacturing projects in India. The campus is part of Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chain outside China and expand manufacturing capacity in India, one of its fastest-growing markets.

The dormitory construction is being prioritized to accommodate the large workforce that the facility will require. According to officials familiar with the development, these dorms will offer safe and affordable housing to thousands of employees, many of whom are expected to migrate from other regions. The campus is being designed as a self-contained ecosystem with residential, healthcare, and recreational facilities.

Foxconn’s move comes at a time when the Indian government is actively promoting local manufacturing under initiatives like Make in India and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics. The new plant is expected to significantly contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a global electronics manufacturing hub.

The Karnataka government has welcomed the project and provided necessary infrastructural and policy support to facilitate the construction. State Industries Minister M.B. Patil stated that the government is working closely with Foxconn to ensure smooth implementation of the project and timely completion.

“This facility will not only boost exports and attract further investment but also provide thousands of employment opportunities, especially for skilled youth,” he said.

Currently, Foxconn operates another facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, where it also manufactures iPhones. The new Karnataka campus will enhance Foxconn's production capacity and allow for more flexibility in Apple’s global supply chain.

Industry analysts view this project as a signal of growing confidence among global tech companies in India’s manufacturing capabilities. The Foxconn campus is expected to support not only iPhone assembly but also the manufacturing of components and accessories, thereby creating indirect employment and strengthening local supply chains.

Moreover, the campus will include advanced manufacturing technologies and high-quality standards, helping India move up the value chain in electronics production. Training and skill development programs are likely to be introduced in partnership with local institutions to prepare the workforce for high-tech manufacturing roles.

The first phase of production is expected to begin by 2025, with recruitment, training, and initial operations ramping up in the coming months.

As the campus takes shape, it represents not just an industrial investment but a transformative force for the regional economy—bringing new jobs, infrastructure, and opportunities to one of India’s most dynamic tech corridors.
