While the sharp rise has strengthened gold’s appeal as a hedge against uncertainty, experts advise investors to remain cautious and consider long term fundamentals before making fresh allocations.

Gold prices witnessed a strong rally on Wednesday January 28 2026, as futures trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange recorded fresh all time highs. The yellow metal benefited from a combination of global uncertainty, a weaker US dollar, and sustained demand from investors seeking safe haven assets.

MCX gold February futures surged sharply during early trade, rising by more than Rs 4,700 to reach a new record level of Rs 1,62,429 per 10 grams. This marked the first time gold futures crossed the Rs 1.6 lakh milestone, reflecting heightened risk aversion in global markets. The price jump represented a gain of nearly three percent within a single trading session.

Market participants attributed the rally to ongoing geopolitical tensions, which have increased demand for precious metals. Additionally, softness in the US dollar made gold more attractive for international investors, further supporting prices. Strong buying interest in the spot market also contributed to the upward momentum.

Silver prices followed a similar trend, posting even sharper gains. MCX silver March futures jumped by nearly Rs 21,400 to touch a record high of Rs 3,77,655 per kilogram. The rise of around six percent highlighted robust demand for industrial and investment purposes, with silver benefiting from broader strength in the precious metals complex.

Despite the sharp rally in futures markets, physical gold prices across India showed only marginal movement. According to available data, the price of 24 karat gold stood at Rs 16,194 per gram on January 28, marginally lower than the previous day. The 22 karat gold rate was recorded at Rs 14,844 per gram, while 18 karat gold was priced at Rs 12,145 per gram.

The minimal change in physical prices compared to futures indicates short term stability in retail demand. Traders noted that while futures prices react quickly to global developments and currency movements, physical markets often adjust more gradually.

Gold rates varied slightly across major cities such as Delhi Mumbai Chennai and Bangalore, mainly due to differences in local taxes and making charges. However, overall price trends remained consistent nationwide.

Analysts believe that gold prices could remain volatile in the near term as investors closely monitor global economic indicators, interest rate expectations, and geopolitical developments. Central bank policies and currency movements are also expected to play a key role in determining price direction.

While the sharp rise has strengthened gold’s appeal as a hedge against uncertainty, experts advise investors to remain cautious and consider long term fundamentals before making fresh allocations. With silver also showing strong momentum, the precious metals market is likely to stay in focus in the coming weeks.

The record breaking rally on January 28 underscores gold’s continued relevance during periods of global instability, even as physical market prices show signs of short term consolidation.
