Government and Expert Reactions A senior government official stated, “This purchase is both economically viable and diplomatically strategic.

In a strategic step ahead of high-stakes trade negotiations with the United States, Indian refiners have significantly increased their purchase of American crude oil, with confirmed shipments amounting to nearly 11.2 million barrels scheduled for delivery over the coming weeks. This marks one of the largest single-phase imports of US oil by India and is seen as a proactive measure to improve bilateral economic engagement.

According to sources in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the decision aligns with India’s broader objective of energy diversification and reducing reliance on Middle Eastern crude, especially amid fluctuating geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region.

 Strategic Energy Sourcing

The increased orders for US crude have been placed by major public and private-sector refiners, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Reliance Industries. Most of these consignments are expected to be sourced from the US Gulf Coast, with delivery scheduled through mid-May to June 2025.

This move comes at a time when India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, is working to expand its energy basket and deepen trade ties with multiple global partners. Energy analysts say the large-volume purchase not only ensures supply security but also positions India as a key commercial partner for the US energy sector.

 Government and Expert Reactions

A senior government official stated, “This purchase is both economically viable and diplomatically strategic. It signals India’s interest in strengthening long-term energy relations with the United States while reducing risks associated with a single-region dependency.”

Energy experts also point out that importing US light sweet crude helps Indian refiners balance their blend mix and optimize refinery performance, especially as global prices remain volatile due to ongoing conflicts and supply disruptions.

🇮🇳🇺🇸 Trade Talks and Geopolitical Context

The upcoming India-US trade discussions are expected to cover a range of issues, including tariff reductions, digital trade, pharmaceutical exports, and energy cooperation. The timing of the crude purchase is widely viewed as an effort to showcase India’s commitment to fair and open trade with Washington.

Trade officials believe this action may improve India’s bargaining position, especially in seeking concessions on other key exports like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT services.

India’s Growing Role in Global Oil Markets

India has been steadily increasing its imports of US oil since the lifting of US export restrictions in 2015. In recent years, the share of US crude in India’s overall oil imports has grown from just 1% to nearly 8%, and the trend is expected to continue with future long-term contracts under negotiation.

The current deal of 11.2 million barrels could set the tone for broader energy and trade collaboration between the two democracies in the years to come.
