In a major boost to its market position, Mahindra & Mahindra has reported a significant surge in passenger vehicle sales, overtaking Hyundai and Tata Motors to claim the second spot in India’s car market for the month of March 2025.

According to the latest sales data released by the company, Mahindra sold over 48,000 passenger vehicles, marking a year-on-year growth of more than 20%. The performance was primarily driven by robust demand for its SUV lineup, including the Scorpio-N, XUV700, Thar, and Bolero Neo, all of which continue to be top choices among urban and rural buyers.

Industry analysts believe that Mahindra’s success lies in its focused SUV strategy, timely product launches, and strong brand loyalty. While Hyundai and Tata still lead in hatchbacks and EVs respectively, Mahindra’s dominance in the SUV segment has helped it climb the sales ladder rapidly.

Speaking on the achievement, a Mahindra spokesperson said, “Our growth reflects the trust Indian consumers place in our rugged, reliable SUVs. We are committed to expanding our portfolio with future-ready electric and hybrid models to meet evolving demands.”

Another contributing factor has been Mahindra’s increased production capacity and streamlined supply chain operations, which have helped the brand overcome earlier delays caused by semiconductor shortages. With enhanced dealer network reach and aggressive marketing, Mahindra has managed to penetrate both urban and semi-urban markets.

This milestone is also seen as a wake-up call for competitors, as Mahindra eyes further expansion in the electric vehicle space. The upcoming XUV.e series and Born Electric models are expected to add further momentum to the company’s growth in FY2025–26.

As the auto industry continues to recover post-pandemic, Mahindra’s sharp rise is being hailed as one of the biggest turnarounds in the Indian automotive sector.
