The broader market sentiment remained fragile, and with little positive trigger, it appears likely that the market will continue to face headwinds in the coming days.

On January 16, Indian stock markets began the day with significant losses, breaking their three-day winning streak. Both benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, were weighed down by weak global cues and profit booking by investors. Despite the initial boost from the positive global development regarding the US inflation figures for December, which had come in lower than expected, the momentum in international markets quickly faded. This shift led to a bearish outlook on the domestic front.

At 10:50 am, the Sensex had fallen by 706 points, or 0.92%, trading at 76,335.94, while the Nifty experienced a drop of 190 points, or 0.82%, standing at 23,121.60. The sharp fall came as a result of various sectors taking a hit, with broad-based declines across industries. The financial, energy, and information technology sectors were among the biggest losers, contributing to the overall negative sentiment.

The market breadth, however, reflected a mixed outlook, with 1,830 shares advancing, 1,240 declining, and 119 remaining unchanged. This indicated that while a majority of stocks were in the red, there were still pockets of strength within the market, though the overall trend pointed toward caution. Investors, spooked by the global weakness and the correction in equities, appeared to take a step back, shifting focus to risk management.

Overall, while the opening session reflected some cautious optimism due to the lower-than-expected inflation in the US, the market soon turned negative, highlighting the vulnerability of investors to global uncertainties.
