With global and domestic factors aligning, market experts predict volatility in the short term but remain optimistic about long-term growth, especially as India continues to attract investments in key sectors such as renewable energy, technology, and infrastructure.

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Indian stock markets are poised for a positive opening, driven by robust global cues and anticipated domestic developments. At 6:35 AM, GIFT Nifty futures were trading at 23,416, marking a 150-point rise, signaling a potential gap-up opening for the benchmark indices. The day's market movement is expected to be shaped by several factors, including Q3 corporate earnings, foreign institutional investor (FII) activity, and global market trends.

In the previous trading session, Indian equity markets ended on a positive note. The BSE Sensex advanced by 224.45 points, or 0.29%, to close at 76,724.08, while the NSE Nifty50 recorded a gain of 37.15 points, or 0.16%, to finish at 23,213.20. Gains were supported by strong performances in key sectors such as banking and metals, which offset losses in IT and FMCG stocks.

Market participants are awaiting Q3 earnings reports from key players, including Reliance Industries (RIL), Infosys, and Axis Bank, which are expected to provide further direction. Analysts predict that corporate earnings will be pivotal in determining the market's trajectory, especially amid global economic uncertainties.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continue to play a critical role in influencing market sentiment. However, recent trends show sustained selling pressure, with FIIs recording net outflows worth ₹30,307 crore in January so far, including ₹4,534 crore in the previous session alone. This selling activity has kept the benchmark indices under pressure, with the Sensex and Nifty down 1.8% on a year-to-date basis.

Globally, markets remain optimistic after positive cues from Wall Street. US indices surged overnight following lower-than-expected inflation data, which raised hopes for potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in 2025. Major indices like the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq posted significant gains, bolstered further by strong quarterly results from major financial institutions like JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs.

Asian markets mirrored this optimism, with key indices in Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong trading higher. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.54%, while South Korea’s Kospi was up 1.16%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index also climbed 1.72%, reflecting strong global sentiment.

In addition to corporate earnings and global trends, market participants are also keeping an eye on the upcoming Union Budget, which is expected to outline key reforms and policies for the Indian economy. With the Indian rupee staging a recovery against the US dollar in the previous session, appreciating by 0.3% to close at ₹86.36 per dollar, macroeconomic factors are also playing a role in shaping market dynamics.

Meanwhile, the primary market is buzzing with activity. Landmark Immigration IPO and Stallion India IPO are set to open for subscription today, while Rikhav Securities and Kabra Jewels IPOs enter their second day of subscription. Laxmi Dental IPO’s allotment results are expected to be finalized, adding to the excitement in the SME and mainline IPO segments.

With global and domestic factors aligning, market experts predict volatility in the short term but remain optimistic about long-term growth, especially as India continues to attract investments in key sectors such as renewable energy, technology, and infrastructure.
