Indian equity markets started the day on a positive note this Friday, overcoming global uncertainties and continued selling pressure from foreign institutional investors (FIIs). At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex climbed by 62 points, or 0.08%, reaching 77,682.59, while the Nifty 50 rose 25.40 points, or 0.11%, to 23,551. Despite this early momentum, investors remained cautious, closely monitoring both global economic challenges and domestic corporate earnings.
Globally, markets faced headwinds as rising bond yields and uncertainties in key economies weighed on investor sentiment. In the US, concerns about inflation, a tight labor market, and expectations of continued higher interest rates contributed to an uptick in Treasury yields. This came during a shortened trading session in observance of former President Jimmy Carter's funeral. Similarly, in the UK, worries over government finances drove bond yields to their highest level in over 16 years, while the British pound suffered its steepest three-day drop in almost two years.
In light of these global concerns, investors are keeping a close eye on key upcoming events. These include the release of US employment data, the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting, and the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump later this month. Domestically, market participants are also awaiting the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy meeting in February, which is expected to provide further clarity on interest rates and inflation expectations.
While the Indian markets showed a positive opening, the outlook remained uncertain due to global macroeconomic factors. The resilience of the Indian market amidst these challenges reflects optimism around corporate earnings and the strength of the domestic economy, though caution prevailed as investors balanced opportunities against the backdrop of broader global risks.
