Despite this, the market sentiment remains subdued, and traders are likely to remain cautious as the year draws to a close.

On December 30, the Indian stock markets are expected to begin cautiously, with global economic uncertainties casting a shadow over investor confidence. The early indicators suggest that the benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty50, could open flat as market participants continue to assess various factors affecting the global and domestic economies. At 6:35 AM, GIFT Nifty futures were trading about 9 points higher at the 24,001 level, signaling a slight uptick. Despite this, the market sentiment remains subdued, and traders are likely to remain cautious as the year draws to a close.

The previous session saw the Sensex gaining 226 points, or 0.29%, to close at 78,699.07. Similarly, the Nifty50 saw an increase of 63 points, or 0.27%, finishing the day at 23,813.40. The market's performance on Friday was somewhat positive, driven by a few large-cap stocks, but it lacked significant momentum as global markets showed signs of weakness.

The outlook for the Indian economy in the coming quarter is clouded by various factors, including a slowdown in demand across key sectors. Experts suggest that the third quarter earnings (October-December) for FY25 will largely mirror the trends seen in the second quarter, with several industries facing challenges due to reduced consumer demand. This is particularly concerning for sectors like manufacturing, automotive, and consumer goods, which have been dealing with sluggish growth.

In addition to sectoral concerns, the broader macroeconomic environment, including global inflationary pressures, rising commodity prices, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, continues to influence investor sentiment. Global stock markets have been struggling with volatility, which has led to caution among investors. Wall Street, in particular, has faced sell-offs, with investors reassessing valuations and reacting to higher Treasury yields.

Looking ahead, the Indian government’s approach to tackling the economic slowdown will be a focal point for investors. With the Budget for FY25 on the horizon, much attention is focused on the government’s strategy for addressing the economic challenges. The Budget is expected to outline fiscal policies, measures to boost domestic demand, and incentives to support key sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, and manufacturing. Analysts believe that the Budget could provide critical guidance on how the government plans to support economic growth in the coming fiscal year.

For investors, the focus will also be on the performance of the major indices and individual stocks. The ongoing performance of large-cap stocks will play a key role in determining market direction, as institutional investors, particularly domestic mutual funds, continue to dominate the buying activity. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) are also keeping a close eye on the macroeconomic conditions, though their participation has been somewhat subdued in recent months.
