Shares of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders opened at Rs 2,375 on Friday, marking a significant decline of nearly 50% from the previous close of Rs 4,728.80. However, this sharp drop was a result of a stock split that reduced the face value of the shares from Rs 10 to Rs 5. The price drop caused some confusion among investors, as certain trading platforms displayed the previous closing price without adjusting for the split, creating the false impression of a drastic fall in share value.
After accounting for the stock split, the shares were only down by 2.13% on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) as of 11:09 am. The adjustment is in line with the expectations of investors who had previously bought the stock in anticipation of the split. The stock had gained in the prior session due to this anticipation.
The stock split, which aligns with the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) guidelines for capital restructuring, is designed to increase liquidity and make shares more affordable to retail investors. This strategic move aims to attract a broader investor base and enhance market participation. The company's focus on improving liquidity highlights its long-term commitment to boosting investor confidence and facilitating greater market access.
