The proposed investment will be directed toward the development of cutting-edge aviation infrastructure, including research and development facilities, aircraft assembly lines, engine technology, and support ecosystems.

Reliance Defence, a company under the leadership of Anil Ambani, has revealed a bold vision for India's aerospace industry with an announced investment of Rs 10,000 crore. The company plans to build a fully indigenous commercial passenger jet by 2028, marking one of the most ambitious private-sector aerospace initiatives in India.

The proposed investment will be directed toward the development of cutting-edge aviation infrastructure, including research and development facilities, aircraft assembly lines, engine technology, and support ecosystems. According to sources familiar with the plan, the project will be rolled out in phases and will also include partnerships with global aerospace firms for technology sharing and expertise.

Reliance Defence aims to establish state-of-the-art facilities in select locations across India, with a special focus on Maharashtra and Gujarat, which are already home to emerging aerospace hubs. The initiative is expected to generate significant employment, stimulate innovation, and strengthen India's capabilities in both defence and civilian aviation manufacturing.

This move is closely aligned with the Indian government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat missions, which encourage domestic production of high-value technology and reduce dependency on imports. Presently, India relies almost entirely on foreign manufacturers for commercial aircraft, making this project a potential game-changer for the sector.

While the company has previously focused on defence contracts and partnerships, the new initiative signals an important diversification into civil aviation manufacturing. Industry experts believe that if Reliance Defence can deliver on its 2028 goal, it would place India among the few nations capable of designing and building commercial jets.

To support the project, Reliance Defence is also expected to collaborate with academic and research institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These partnerships will focus on areas like lightweight materials, aerodynamics, avionics, and flight simulation systems.

In addition to the manufacturing of commercial aircraft, the company is planning to build aerospace parks with dedicated supply chain clusters that will involve small and medium enterprises. This would not only contribute to the larger aerospace economy but also enhance skill development and technological capabilities across the country.

Anil Ambani, once seen as retreating from major industrial projects, appears to be making a comeback by entering a strategically critical and capital-intensive sector. If successful, this project could reposition Reliance Defence as a major player in India’s industrial and technological growth narrative.

Although the project’s success will depend on regulatory clearances, international cooperation, and sustained capital infusion, the announcement has already attracted interest from investors and policymakers. With global aviation demand set to rise, particularly in Asia, the entry of a domestic aircraft manufacturer could redefine India’s role in the global aviation value chain.
