On Thursday, December 26, the Indian stock market saw fluctuating trends, with benchmark indices BSE Sensex and Nifty50 initially starting strong but losing momentum as the day progressed. The Sensex, which was up earlier, reversed its early gains and was down by 49.83 points, or 0.06%, at 78,423 by 11 AM. Similarly, the Nifty50 also slipped below the crucial 23,750 level, down by 3.20 points, or 0.01%, at 23,724.45.
The market faced pressure from sectors like FMCG, IT, and Metal, which experienced losses. On the other hand, the Auto and Public Sector Bank (PSB) indices led the gainers. Notably, stocks like SBI, ICICI Bank, and Maruti Suzuki saw positive movement, while Asian Paints and Tech Mahindra were among the few stocks that traded in the red.
In terms of broader market performance, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose by 0.22%, and the Nifty Midcap 100 gained by 0.15%. The Nifty Bank sector was the top performer, climbing by 0.82%, while sectors like FMCG, Metal, IT, and Consumer Durables showed resilience. Overall, the market is navigating a period of low trading volume, influenced by the holiday season, with no major domestic or international triggers to push the indices in either direction.
The flat to negative performance in the Indian stock market is in contrast with the broader global market rally, where U.S. and European indices showed modest gains on Christmas Eve, but the market remains cautious, especially in light of potential economic shifts in 2025. The outlook for the rest of the day remains uncertain, with traders looking ahead to the new year for clearer signals.
