Key Factors Behind the Stock Market Crash: US Federal Reserve's Rate Cut Decision: The US Federal Reserve's recent move to cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 4.25–4.5% weighed heavily on global markets.

Indian stock markets faced another severe blow on Thursday, December 19, as both the Sensex and Nifty 50 indices continued their losing streak, with heavy selling pressure across the board. This marks the fourth consecutive day of declines, and the relentless selloff has resulted in a staggering loss of over Rs 12 lakh crore in investor wealth in just four days.

The market opened sharply lower, with the BSE Sensex down by 1,153 points, or 1.44%, at 79,029.07. The Nifty 50 followed suit, dropping 321.70 points, or 1.33%, to trade at 23,877. These losses come after a series of negative developments in the global financial markets, with key US indices also experiencing significant declines.

Key Factors Behind the Stock Market Crash:

US Federal Reserve's Rate Cut Decision:
The US Federal Reserve's recent move to cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 4.25–4.5% weighed heavily on global markets. Although the rate cut was anticipated, the Fed’s cautious outlook for future monetary easing in 2025 triggered widespread investor concerns. The central bank's signaling that it may slow down rate cuts in the future spooked investors and contributed to a sharp fall in US stock markets, with key indices down by 3% overnight.

Global Risk-Off Sentiment:
The Fed's caution regarding future rate cuts fueled fears of a prolonged period of high-interest rates, which in turn spooked global investors. The sell-off in US stocks quickly spilled over to other markets, including India. The global risk-off sentiment, triggered by concerns over economic slowdown and inflation, has kept investors on edge, leading to widespread profit-taking in equities.

Profit Booking and Investor Caution:
After an extended period of market volatility and uncertainty, investors in Indian markets are now focused on protecting their portfolios. With global cues turning negative, many traders have opted to book profits, which has further intensified the downward pressure on the Indian indices.

Weakening of Investor Confidence:
The combination of global economic uncertainties, including slower-than-expected recovery in key economies and inflationary pressures, has caused a significant dip in investor confidence. The Indian market, which is closely linked to global market trends, has experienced an outflow of foreign capital, exacerbating the current market downturn.

Falling Market Capitalization:
The decline in both Sensex and Nifty has resulted in a sharp fall in the market capitalization of Indian companies. Over the past four days, over Rs 12 lakh crore has been wiped off the total market value of listed companies, which is an indication of the broader selloff taking place across sectors.
