As a result, the Indian stock market is likely to remain under pressure in the short term, with eyes on upcoming earnings reports and any updates on global economic policies.

The Indian stock market saw a lower opening on January 9, 2025, following weak global cues. The BSE Sensex dropped by 447 points, or 0.57%, to 77,700, while the Nifty 50 declined by 131 points, or 0.56%, to 23,557. The broader market mirrored this sentiment, with both the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices showing minimal movement. Around 20 of the 30 Sensex stocks were in the red, including heavyweights such as L&T, Tata Motors, HDFC Bank, and Reliance Industries. Similarly, 35 of the 50 Nifty stocks also recorded losses.

Sectors such as Nifty Financial Services, PSU Bank, and Realty indices were down by 1%, while the Nifty Bank and Metal indices were down by up to 0.9%. On a more positive note, the Nifty FMCG index rose by 1.3%, as investors sought refuge in defensive stocks amidst the broader market weakness.

In the primary market, investors are looking at several IPOs today, including Standard Glass Lining, Quadrant Future Tek, and Capital Infra Trust, among others. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has also approved IPOs for companies like Regreen-Excel EPC India and Dr. Agarwal’s Health Care.

On the earnings front, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is expected to report a 6.3% YoY growth in Q3 revenue, reaching Rs 6,445.63 crore. Analysts predict a modest recovery in corporate earnings in Q3, with combined net profits of Nifty 50 companies expected to grow by 7.9% YoY, improving from the previous quarter’s 1.8% growth.

Global markets are also facing pressure, with Asian indices following a volatile session on Wall Street. The U.S. Federal Reserve's December meeting minutes revealed concerns about inflation, signaling that interest rates could remain higher for longer. In Asia, China's consumer prices rose by only 0.1% YoY, fueling concerns over deflation. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Japan’s Nikkei both recorded losses, while the U.S. stock markets showed mixed results overnight, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones posting slight gains.

The global economic environment, with inflation concerns, interest rate policies, and weak domestic demand in China, continues to weigh on investor sentiment. As a result, the Indian stock market is likely to remain under pressure in the short term, with eyes on upcoming earnings reports and any updates on global economic policies.
